Try an eBay search for 'alfa 164 front pipe', there are plenty on there. About this time last year I ordered the short front pipe as I was pretty much in the same boat as you being quoted something like £270 by local specialist. I think I found it for about £65 in the end.

Can't vouch for the quality of eBay stuff of course but I did manage to track one down with a two year guarantee.

EDIT: see link below, an improvement on what you were quoted:

Hi,

I bought this one. They're still offering two year guarantee and the price is about the same. I can't say I fitted it myself but I don't recall the garage that did it having any trouble.

N.B. My car is a 97 3.0 Super 24v.

---

N.B. The same seller has two listings for the long front pipe at £80.87 and at £158.39 - I can't tell the difference between them from the listing. I only needed the short pipe last year.

thanks Tom, my 164, is a 97 3.0 super 24v manual, snap, if yours is not an auto. thanks for the advice and links. i phoned the main dealers, mangoletsi in knutsford, and they didn't have any, he thought they were now obsolete. although they still stock 164 parts. thanks again.

Don't know if you have bought them yet but you can just buy the flexi part and get it welded in to your own pipes these are about £10-15 each.
There are also ones you can get that you can clamp like a normal pipe but never used them?
Not sure what the originals are made from but there is a big difference in the thickness of the originals and the sound resonance is less than the replacements. Big difference in price though.
