I hope to return to the UK before year end and for good. Currently I have a 156 1.9 jtd mjet 150 bhp. Fab car and excellent mpg......I am doing 20k miles per year and will hopefully be doing half that in Britain. So I am considering a 159 2.4 sw. All advice and opinions will be very welcome as I have zero experience of the 159. Might even consider a Brera 2.4 ?????
Many thanks in advance

In short, fantastic car but not the best fuel economy ! I've got a 2.4 JTD, not the sportwagon and i think its the best engine out of the lot but don't be expecting good mpg. If you drive slowly and religiously to the speed limits on a motorway you might, just might get about 42mpg but with normal 'enthusiastic' driving you get between 30-34 on long journeys and about 25 around town. Likely to be less with a sw as its heavier.

Apart from it being a thristy brute it is wonderful to drive and one of the best looking out there. It's price compared to any of its rivals makes it a worthy choice !

I think it depends a lot on what your driving pattern will be. If enough trips are long enough to get the engine warm and fast enough to allow DPF regen (say once a week at least?) then it's a fantastic engine.

Thanks for all that fella's  The fuel consumption should not be too much of an issue for me....considering the superior roads in Britain, significantly cheaper road tax, insurance, servicing costs and the initial cost price of cars in Britain. Ireland is motoring hell IMO!!!

I made a similar move to you, had a 156 1.9 Veloce SW and pondered for ages before getting my 159 Lusso SW. It is a far superior car in pretty much every way, I never would have believed I'd say that because I loved that car.

The ride is infinitely better and everything just feels well put together in comparison. The only disappointment for me is economy. I did get 47mpg on a motorway journey but if I just go to work and back which is only a couple of miles away my average is down to the 34-35 mark, figures I never saw on my 156. It's also not quite as responsive as the 156 but is more than quick enough really so not a problem although you won't have that problem with a 2.4.

I'm sure a dpf removal and remap would cure both of the above problems, will consider that when my warranty runs out in January.
