Having read a few threads on this I thought I would add my comments

My car is actually 159 Lusso Sportswagon JTDM 2.4 Q4 (I believe there have only been 122 Q4 JTDM cars sold in the UK) which in theory should be worse on fuel than the standard car. I am getting 31-34 mpg in the 4 weeks I have owned the car. Living in Cornwall is not great for fuel consumption because of the poor roads and the hills and valleys and don't forget rubbish traffic. Although the consumption is not much better than my old discovery, it isn't as bad as it could be. My old SEAT 1.9 tdi was doing around 40 for the same journey but to be honest the Alfa is so much better to drive and stands out from the crowd. I haven't met anyone yet who has said they don't think the car is anything less than beautiful.
What I would say is a light weight right foot and sensible driving easily achieves these figures and when I am driving extra careful I have seen 35.4 mpg on one journey home. This is a nine mile A road trip up and down three steep valleys between Falmouth and Truro.
