So it seems the gearbox has gone on my dads 57 plate 159 JTDM 1.9. It's been whining for a while and this week we found a puddle of oil on the floor and the gearbox is making an horrendous noise.

Now my question is what's the best way to find out what gearbox the car has, there seems to be quite a few different boxes and places to buy? I've heard of M32, F40 and even M20?

Recon is probably preferred as opposed to used as it seems the bearings have issues with the M32 (if this is the box which we have - I think it probably is).

Any help is appreciated and of course advice on where to buy too

hi, alfa 159 1.9 manuel uses m32 gearbox.
you can find all parts both autolusso and ebay.

Most reasonable size towns will have a gearbox specialist that will supply and fit a recon 'box.
The tiny 'city' that is Preston where I am has at least 2, maybe 3 such places.
It's a very common gearbox and a common repair job.
And well known for being rubbish...

I guess expect to pay circa £800 all in with delivery and the chance of losing the £250-300 for a returned 'rebuildable' box.

Sounds like a classic m32 failure, the failed bearing has probably spun inside the end casing so you will also need a new casing on top of the bearings and possibly gear hubs.
There are quite a few m32 box specialists around the country, there is a place in Halifax, A&S clutch technology that is very well recomended from the vauxhall forums who strips the gears out with the box in place and turns them around in a day.

Yep, M32 box, not sure who advised the other options, as only m32 was fitted to the 1.9 ( the 2.0 has a few options). As you say, common problem ( try and avod accelerating from low revs in 5th/6th). It's the same gearbox as the 'vauxhall' 1.9 CDTi ( in vectras and astras) so getting it sorted should be easy.

Yes you have an M32 but there are many different versions of the M32, one from a Astra etc will not fit as they are missing the bolt holes the 159 needs for it rear engine mount

We can rebuild your gearbox, costs depend on how bad the damage is and what needs to be replaced
