1.9 06 jtdm 50k miles. egr replaced last year. mostly a steady motorway driver, x2 15 mile motorway trips every day. generally i'm a slow driver.

for once, i was slinging it around a bit today and i got a beep and the engine warning light as i was driving through town. it has since become an unhappy car and though it will drive ok there's nothing much there if i put my foot down.

rang the dealer and suggested dpf to him after looking on here and he told me to go and run it down the motorway in 4th gear. but he covered himself by saying it might be something else. anyway, fair play to him.

so does this sound like the most likely 1st thing to try before taking it in? in which case how fast, in what gear, and for how long? any ideas what else it might be?

oh, one other thing, had the timing belt changed last week.

your best bet is to check out the error code(s) held by the ECU. Easiest way is to purchase a ELM cable and download a copy of FiatECUScan. Plenty of threads on here on which cable to buy.. search is your friend ;)
You could always get your dealer to do this for you but buying the cable will be cheaper :thumbs:

your best bet is to check out the error code(s) held by the ECU. Easiest way is to purchase a ELM cable and download a copy of FiatECUScan onto a laptop. Plenty of threads on here on which cable to buy.. search is your friend ;)
You could always get your dealer to do this for you but buying the cable will be cheaper :thumbs:

hmm i think that's probably beyond my ability. i suppose i'm really asking will i do any harm trying to run it down the motorway to correct the fault, or could the fault be any of loads of things that i could do a load of damage by trying that.

car is a bloody liability. had a little toyota for 5 years and all that went was the clutch. wasn't much fun to drive though i suppose.

well maybe this post will be some use to somebody doing a search one day (mate this is not your blog lol), but i just took it for a burn up the motorway to see if it would clear. nothing happened but somewhere else it says it will only try and clear the dpf if you have more than half a tank of diesel which i didn't have. it ran totally fine but still getting the warning light.

will see if something happens tomorrow with a full tank of fuel otherwise off to the independent for probably another egr valve or some such thing (would be 2nd in 6 months).

Not sure what your worried about... The software goes on a laptop, the elm cable connects the laptop to the cars obd port, you select your car in the easy to follow fes software and it gives you the error codes... Easy :)

Not sure what your worried about... The software goes on a laptop, the elm cable connects the laptop to the cars obd port, you select your car in the easy to follow fes software and it gives you the error codes... Easy :)
well if anyone is in edinburgh and can help me do the scan there's a bottle of scotch in it for them :p

My suggestion (as it happened to my Ti yesterday) is to ensure you have AA cover and give them a call and say that the EML has just come on and you are don't want to do any damage.

Patrol came out, plugged the car in and gave me a diagnosis. Mine was a faulty oxygen sensor which was cured after unplugging and replugging....

I have also used the same solution for my wifes Saab which resulted in a £1000 bill:wow::cry: covered by Saab approved used :lol:

159 diesel check engine light came on

It's the second time it happened.
First time it was pouring down with rain.
In any gear it didn't go over 3300 revs.
This time it was a sunny day driving 100 km/h in 5th gear on the motorway.
Then the check the engine light came on.
Took it to the alfa specialist and was told it's a diesel problem here in NZL.
The tank was half empty so I filled it up.
It was running fine but then it happened again.
Didn't go faster then 3300 revs in any gear.
So I stopped, waited 3 minutes and drove on again, after revving it up to 5000 revs in neutral.
Still runs fine again, no problems.

so....blame it on the diesel here in New Zealand...

oh, one other thing, had the timing belt changed last week.
I would pop it back to the garage who fitted the timing belt and ask them to code read it for you.I have a garage and would be happy to check it if I had just changed the belt.The car is in get me home mode hence not having much power.I would check the crank and cam sensors along with the wiring as It sounds more like this than the egr valve [as it was relaced recently].As other poeple say on here get it code read asap before the engine gets damaged then you will have a better idea of whats gone wrong

update for anyone ever doing a search on these symptoms:

it was the manifold inlet valve clogged up and knackered. quite an expensive fix.

Back home again and reflecting on the cause for the check engine light came on.

In order to save gas I drove with lowest revs possible ...under 2000 in 5th gear 80-100 km/h...

That seems to be the times when the problem occured.

Back driving in the City the check the engine light is not showing anymore.

Anyone with an explanation....?

Forget it and move on?

With all the niggles on the 159 I'd almost be disappointed if the engine warning sensor wasn't as equally temperamental ;)
