159 1750 TBi performance tuning

Seeing as hardly anyone has tried tuning the 1750 TBi 159 I thought I would start a thread following the tuning of my car. I don't know if anyone will be interested but maybe it will help someone else with a 159 1750TBi who is looking to improve performance.

Honestly, the 159 is such a fantastic car and it makes me sad to see that few people have even bothered to give it a try. Think of it like this: BMW make excellent cars, no question, I have owned a few and besides the occasional styling hiccup, they really are great cars. But BMW sell millions of cars and they have a huge budget to develop new ones, so one should expect nothing less. Now take the 159, the engineering (like the excellent suspension), the looks, the attention to detail, all this from a manufacturer that sells 150,000 cars a year and is on a shoe string budget. You really have to take your hat off to Alfa. The fact that this car was launched in 2005, yet in 2013, without any exterior facelift, it still attracts attention like you cannot believe is, testament to this.

Taking all this into account, the only thing I would improve on my car is the engine. It is a great engine, pulling from so low down and it really moves the big car along, but it doesn't feel like an Alfa engine. It is too quiet, and doesn't feel like it wants to be thrashed. So that is why I have decided to improve it by replacing the exhaust, changing the intake and remapping the ECU. This thread is going to follow the progress of my modifications to my 159 and the results thereof.

Tuning

Before doing anything, I took the car through to FR&R in Centurion to do a premods dyno run for before and after comparisons. The sheet is attached. It made 134kw on the wheels, which I am told is the same as what a stock Golf GTi makes on their dyno.

No problems, it is about time someone did.

Finally someone modding the pretty sister...
i still think 32 is allot but make sure they keep it there so you can compare apples with apples.

the pretty sister has been modded already.. this time brad doing it with software/
Agreed, I already noted that on Saturday, will make sure they don't change it in their favour after the remap.

To be honest, I love the car just like it is. When I first saw the press pics I also thought the 19" Ti wheels would be much better but in real life it all goes together perfectly.

Also, it isn't always about looks. I think the current size is the best compromise between handling and looks for the suspension setup, as they are still able to absorb imperfections in the road and grip nicely too.

Paul, when I took the GTA the ambient correction was around 31/32... Same story the day I took the Abarth...

But you can see on the dyno the air pressure and temps changing... Perhaps their ambient correction cell is screwed :cheese:

Pretty decent results on the wheels for a 1750TBi. My GTA made 149kw odd on the wheels and closer to 350 torque.. So the 1750 not to far off the GTA's power then

Go guys go...everytime I come there the guys always comment that ANOTHER ALFA was here...since I am pushing their name down everyone's throats lol...The more we get there the merrier, Master P, what mods are you running in the 159 now?

I think Brad's car will surprise us all, its a different turbo with a different map and different IC!!! I think it will make even MORE than my GQV!

On another note, Leon most probably told you he'll build a "mild map"??? Seeing as you can SEE your boost gauge go to 1.5bar, I wonder if he'll go over conservative to see how the car runs on a higher boost setting, he'll also up timing and tell you never ever to put in 93 ever again.

Tuning

The 159 has gone in to Wildcat today for the exhaust. They are making a custom system from the turbo to the rear. Any modifications that I do, I always try ensure that they are 100% reversible, so they will completely remove the old system and fabricate the new one from scratch. Basically I will keep the old downpipe and exhaust system in storage in case I ever need or want to return the car to standard.

The new system will be a 76mm downpipe, into a 76mm centre pipe with a silencer and resonator into a 60mm split with a silencer on each tailpipe. It is basically the same system they build for the G6 GTi.

Sorry Brad for going a bit off topic, but I'd like to compare the 159 Ti/GQV and GMA intercoolers, I won't be surprised at all if the GMA's IC is the same as the GQV's IC! The 159 Ti looks like it got the 1750 engine but everything else around that motor is 2.4/1.9 JTDm parts...can you guys confirm this? @Pereby, can you take a pic of the GMA's IC???

Heat transfer rate equation (heat flux) is:
q = h.A(Ts-Tf) where:
q is heat transfer rate is Joule/sec
h is heat transfer coefficient (metal / air interface property)
A is the surface area
(Ts-Tf) is the temperature difference between the metal and the fluid / air.

Volumetric wise the 159Ti intercooler is 44% bigger than the GQV. So one can assume that the surface area of the fins in the radiator is then also 44% different, thus the heat transfer for a given temperature difference at the start of the intercooler is 44%. The funny thing now is that the 159's charge air will cool quicker at the the start of the intercooler, but as the temperature difference becomes less down the length of the intercooler than that of the CQV. The other thing to take into consideration now is the total heat loss over the time spent in the intercooler: This is now a complex integration equation, but for this discussion we will consider it straight forward as:
Q = q.t
Q is total heat loss (in J)
q is heat transfer rate (in J/sec)
t is time (in sec)
and T=C.Q which is Temperature drop is proportional to the heat capacitance of the air in the intercooler (which is [1.012 Joule/(gram.Kelvin)]) so having less air in the intercooler, the actual air temperature drop is bigger for the smaller intercooler.

So all that said, the CQV's charge air will not be 44% warmer at the outlet of the intercooler, but something closer to 22%.

WTF???? Its 15h08pm and Im tired, and then I have to read about joule and Kelvin...

Is a 159 2.4/Ti intercooler a good upgrade for the GQV or not? :)

There is a gradient in the cooling efficiency of the different rows of the intercooler as well to consider (Ti intercooler is 30mm thick with GQV intercooler 80mm thinck!) so the deeper you go into the GQV intercooler the less effective intercooling will be, and the fact that the frontal area of the Ti intercooler is larger means it is exposed to more cooling air than the smaller Giulietta intercooler and can therefore lose more heat to the air passing through it at a given air speed. Even though the actual cooling surface area may be 44% different, in effect the 159 intercooler will be much more efficient. I think it may be up to 60% more effective.

I beg to differ - the intercooler is designed to let air flow through it and the metal weave (thin zig-zag) peices in between is to act like a heatsink - to maximise the surface area exposed to air (if it was a 2D consideration, they would leave out the zig-zag). At a reasonable speed, the ambient air flow through the intercooler is considerably fast thus the ambient air does not heat up all that much, not detracting too much from the effieciency of the back part of the intercooler.

All that said, lets just re-calibrate which of the two 159 tbi or GQV has more power stock?

Tuning

After some annoying delays I will be getting the car back this afternoon.

The delay was due to the fact that I wanted them to build everything from scratch, so they had to have the flange for the downpipe specially made and it took much longer than expected.

Can't wait now...
