yes and no. they are the same if they feature a Blaupunkt-made CD headunit. this includes the vast majority of cars AFAIK.

different markets/models may have had an Alpine or Clarion or Philips based headunit, and those cars with the Blaupunkt sat nav differ slightly too.

if you're unsure, post up a photo of the headunit in the dash.

it's confusing cos not every 156 in the world came with the same headunit.

but you have the standard headunit, most common to the 156, and same as in the saloon.

That's the same stereo that my car (saloon '52) used to have (if that helps)

Well, I think that means that the steering wheel controls should work then - if not, I will just have to return them!

I'm the steering wheel controls are merely resistor ladders (i.e. different resistance depending upon which button is pressed) so you shouldn't have a problem :thumbs:
