Hi guys/gals, a quick question I hope someone can help me with....

Had the Alfa (156 JTS sillyspeed) for about 3 weeks now and I've noticed something strange - my coolant temp gauge never seems to rise? It takes a while to move, then seems to stop around 60deg. It does go higher occasionally, if I sit in traffic it will eventually rise to 90, but is it normal for the temp to be at 60 on these cars?

And if its not normal could this be linked to my climate control not really functioning very well? It doesn't really get cold, more like an asthmatic blowing through a small straw, and doesn't seem to blow hot either?

I've also had a P0481 - cooling fan 2 circuit malfunction error code come up, is this linked also? I can only find 1 main cooling fan in the front of the car so I'm struggling to trace this fault or what it is related to?

Thanks,

Mark

New Thermostat likely to be needed. They open fully when they fail allowing the car to cool to quickly.

Not linked to the climate control.

Re climate control, it won't blow hot if the engine isn't getting up to temp because the thermostat is stuffed. If airflow is weak, then check the pollen filters. There are 2, under the dash on the passengers side. Do a search for a guide as they're hard to find first time. If that's all sorted and it still wont blow cold air then the air con might need regassing.

Cooling fan - the single fan runs 2 speeds - low and high. It might be that there's a problem there.

I believe the previous owner had it regassed earlier this year, he had a lot of MOT work done and I remember him saying he had it gassed. I will check the pollen filters over the weekend. Are they replacement items or should a good clean and blow with a compressor do the trick?

As for the fan fault, it comes up at the same time as another fault that I can't read at the moment, using EasyOBD due to not having the full set of cables yet and this says P0481 cooling fan 2 control circuit malfunction along with P2240 manufacturer specific fault?

If it's been regassed and lost the gas again then it's probably got a leak. Air con specialist should be able to locate.

Just replace the pollen filters. To check you could remove them and clean out any muck from the housing, then see if airflow improves. If they've been in there for a while they could be quite manky.
