Calling all pre-facelift 156 owners with Xenon lights, are the headlight units specific for LHD and RHD cars? ePer suggests so but I'm curious to know the difference, are the igniters angled differently or something to give the correct beam pattern or is beam pattern etc controlled entirely by the ballast?

Cheers (y)

Yes they are LHD or RHD specific.

the difference is the beam shape.
____/ For LHD
\____ For RHD

The lever on the side of the projector flattens the beam for driving on the other side of the road.

The beam shape is defined by the projector.
Nothing to do with the igniter or ballast.

Thank you sir. A NOS pair came up for sale on eBay but sadly they are for a LHD car, seemed a decent purchase for the parts shed but not compatible (y)

Would depend on the price.
Everything except for the projectors is good.

So could be the starting point for a retrofit of modern Bi-Xenon projectors.

They are the same 2 1/2” AL (Bosch/Magnetti-Marelli) units as in my Mk1 Audi TT.

I upgraded my TT lights a couple of years ago with a retrofit set of Morimoto projectors from EM Tuning.

That's interesting. So in theory you could get a correct pair of new projectors and potentially swap them over, or as you say go modern. In terms of price it doesn't leave much change from a grand, albeit for what must be rare parts now (y).
