Did you say that there is noise when in nuetral but when you press the clutch down the noise vanish. It could be input shaft bearing.I had this situation on my Twin Spark and when the gearbox was remove the bearings was missing but miraculously there was no damage to the gears.

Yes, noise not always there but when it is, depress the clutch and it goes...
 
Well either way at least you got a good company of people here to advise/help when you do diagnose it ! Fingers crossed its a simple fix
 
I would just change the gearbox oil as a first step. Use decent oil and it may well quieten things down. Certainly helped on a whining gearbox on my old 156 (at least for a while.....).
 
Alfa's like this are worth more than their monetary value. There are now less than 500 156 V6's registered.

You paid ÂŁ500 for the car. For the sake of another ÂŁ500 it's got to be worth fixing if the rest of the car is sound?

Ask yourself "What car can I buy for ÂŁ1000 - that's as much fun as this?" :inlove:
