156 unusual engine noise

734 Views 7 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Tommywho156
I have a 2002 156 1.8ts. My car recently started to get a light vibration through all rpms higher than 2000. I didn't think much of it but now I have an unusual noise coming from the engine. Its more of like a rattling sound ( I posted a link to the vid). It sounds like it is coming from under the cam cover. I read that it may be the variator but it doesn't sound like a diesel. It also happens at all rpm ranges. The oil level is also adequate. Any thoughts would be appreciated?

When was the cam-belt, tensioners etc changed?
Get the cover off and inspect everything closely until you have don't drive it!

If you post pics with the cam-belt cover off we may be able to spot something but to me it sounds as if the pulley/tensioner is loose/knackered.
When I bought the car the guy said they had just changed the timing belt and pullys. That was 15k kilometers ago. I will pull it off and post pics tommorow. I it's the tensioner how hard of a job is it to replace?

Full cambelt job I'm afraid. That's if it is the tensioner.
that's not the news I wanted to hear. What all should I have them change out during the cam belt?
Good practice when changing an Alfa cambelt is to change the belt, tensioner, pulley and waterpump.
is it okay to run the car with the cam cover off?

I assume you mean cambelt cover..lol

Should be, as long and the belt isn't moving around on the pullies as it could actually be stopping it coming off! Inspect the belt etc before considering starting the engine.
