I have an Alfa 156 1.6 TS and it's a great car. However I have been reading around a lot of forums recently and I see a few people have put turbo engines in from various cars.
One in particular I found someone had a Fiat Coupe Turbo engine fitted.

I have a friend who has a rear end write off Fiat Coupe Turbo which runs perfect just the back end is destroyed. He has offered me the whole car cheap.
I was wondering if anyone can tell me how easy it is to transplant the engine, what is actually involved in transplanting the engine over and running gear, etc.
I would prefer a pro to do it if anyone knows of any transplant specialists in or around Hampshire UK who could do the job for me and what labour costs I would be looking at.

I know a lot of people will say, just sell the car and buy a V6 or something or fit a V6 156 engine as it would be easier but thats all well and good but I am looking to do the turbo transplant due to my car will be that little bit different to others which is the best bit about it.

Perhaps someone on this forum has had a similar job done on their Alfa.
Any help and guidance would be a huge help to point me in the right direction.

Many thanks in advance.

Is it a 20 valve turbo or a 16 valve turbo?

The 20v turbo engine is quite a bit longer than the 16v so is more difficult to fit.

One of the main problems is getting the drive from the gearbox to the wheels. The gearbox is different (stronger and different ratio's), which means the driveshafts are different. The Fiat driveshafts won't fit into the 156 hubs, and the 156 hubs are 156 specific due to the suspension setup. This applies to 16v and 20v engines.

So unless you can get some custon driveshafts you will be stuck.

Things like engine mounts can be sorted if you are ok at welding. The 16V and 20v blocks are quite a bit different to a TS.

Electrics wise you could probably swap over most of it.

I have heard somewhere that the 20V engine mounts are very similar if not identical to the 2.4 JTDm ones. Is this true? (*)

Infact they say that the engine block is the same and that the difference in cc comes from longer stroke for the 2.4. If this is true maybe a 2.4 gearbox/diff/driveshafts will fit the 20V engine?

(*) We don't have any diesels in Athens because of the state's ban on diesels due to "environmental reasons".

I am not too sure about the diesel mounts or the 2.4 block I am afriad. I have a feeling the 2.4 block may be slightly taller due to the longer stroke.

Yeah it is a 16v Turbo. I wasn't aware about the driveshafts but if the 2.4 JTDm ones can fit then that would save some problems and money.

Is there a Turbo engine that would be much easier to fit leaving my current driveshafts?
I know the 155 Q4 would probably be easier but trying to find one is the problem.
