I am passing on this information that one or two may find useful. This time last year I had gear selection problems using the stick shift on my 156 Selespeed. After much tinkering and prodding and searching finally with help from these pages I was guided to electrical power problems. A replacement battery solved my problems and all has been happy since then.
However this years cold weather approached and when trying to reverse from my works cark park, no reverse selection, eventually reverse was selected and I thought here we go again. Battery on charge for a couple of days, no difference, replaced battery, no difference. Struggled along to my local garage, not an Alfa dealer and told them of my problems. Returning that afternoon after work expecting the worst, I was delighted to be told the problem was solved and it has being running well ever since, have just done Cumbria to London and back this weekend.
The garage said they went through everything and eventually found that the earth connections from the gearbox- chassis corroded, with these cleaned up and refit, all is well.
