Hi,
I am having trouble with my 156 selespeed. First of all it would only select R,N,1 and 2. So decided to take it to local alfa garage but on way there as i slowed for traffic lights the car stalled in second. Got it into neutral, started it , but it would not select any gears. Spoke to garage no help whatsoever. Tried again the other day with car started it selected third but nothing else. now it is stuck in third and engine wont start. Any ideas? Any help much appreciated.

If the Sele fluid level is ok, and you can hear the pump running, you probably need to get it to a specialist. Someone who won't just replace major components for lots of money.

There's a guy in Bristol (I think) if you could get it to him...?

The thing about the oil is when the car was in neutral (engine running) it was low. cut engine put in mar mode it went up a bit. I topped it up only needed a little bit. Started this is when it decided to go into third. Now the oil is over maximum is that just because the engine wont start.

The system only takes 600ml of oil. What kind did you top it up with, out of interest.

Any extra will/may be ejected through the breather tube when the system primes.

tutella cs speed only put in a drop less than 100ml as an estimate
could that be causing the problem it being ejected through the breather tube

These syptoms can be caused by a number of problems, too much fluid not being one of them. You need to find a local dealer or specialist with an examiner or equivalent, otherwise you're kinda shooting in the dark.
The selection problem may be one of the sensors on the actuator, a relatively inexpensive fix.

if you're with the AA and have the right level of memebership i.e. homestart and relay then you could just call out the AA to take a look at it and tow it where you need it towing

you need alfadiag to get it in N you cannot tow it when it is in gear !!

The software is from AlfaDiag Alfa Romeo Diagnostic Software. Rarebear (above) will sell you a cable

It's a very worthwhile investment, but I can't help but think that your problem isn't something that can be cured with software though...

Smaky said lift the relay cover in front of battery , two black relays (ignition in MAR position), swap them around whilst doing this listen if pump is priming. If not then pump has worn brushes or fluid is low.
