Hi folks,

The lacquer is peeling off the roof rails on our 156. I can get a load off with my fingernail, but it's a somewhat laborious way of getting it all off.....

One or two people suggest sanding the lacquer off. Would I use normal sandpaper for this, emery paper, or something else? I don't plan to repaint, the metal underneath has been exposed for some time and seems fine.

Cheers all,
Jon

Hi Jon,

As easy as some of the paint comes off, you'll find in other places it's really keyed in and pretty thick. I used a paint removal wheel on my drill then sandpaper then wet and dry and metal polish. The other rail I tried paintstripper. Save time, take them off (easy) and take them to a powder coaters or metal polishing place.

Thanks mate. It'll probably just have to go on my lengthy to-do list in that case. It grows by the day :)

I remember now, I got so peed off trying to get the paint off, I took my belt sander with a 60 grit belt to the rails.
