I have a 2003 156 2.0jts which I keep getting air in the clutch system (about 20-40miles) requiring bleeding but no loss of fluid, I have changed the master cylinder but it is still the same is there likely to be a problem with the vibration damper or is it likely to be the slave cylinder? How complicated is it to get at the slave does it require any specialist 'alfa' tools, I have an Elearn and DTE cd for the car but both have slightly different methods but both seem consistent in that the gearbox has to come right out, is this right?

The slave cylinder is on the inside of the gearbox bell housing on the JTS, so to get at it you need to remove the gearbox. This also its a very good idea to replace the clutch whilst you are at it.

The slave is a bit more protected when it is inside the bell housing, unfortunately this makes it a complete bugger to change if it does fail.

What is really puzzling me at the mo is that I've just completed an 80 mile trip and this time it's been ok the only differance is that I drove all that with my foot resting on clutch pedal just at the point where I could feel hydraulic resistance, so I am wondering if when there is no pressure on the system a joint somewhere is able to draw air in so I am going to check all hoses again especially the joint into the slave which I assume has an o ring seal. the only other thing is the vibration damper which I was going to have a look at and see if there's a way to by-pass to rule this in or out but I don't really know how these work and possible problem if I do manage to by-pass.

Doesn't appear to be losing any level seems to remain the same and I have hunted for a leak or signs of a leak but none found, as I said earlier about driving with slight pressure applied to clutch I have just done another 40mile with no problems so would definately seem to only happen when system has no pressure applied and seems to get worse on a motorway when cruising at a constant high speed (within 70mph of course)?? I was thinking that maybe a seal somewhere is able to flex and allow air to get sucked in but when pressure is applied it pushes the seal to close/seal?? But where??
