Hi!

So I've just paid a deposit on my 156 JTDm 1.9 and due to pick her up early next week. She's got nearly 60k miles on the clock and had her 60k service at 52,000. Not sure if the cambelt was done...

Im just looking for a little advice for a weekly / monthly maintenance schedule for her - I understand oil checks / changes are quite important? Or any other advice you'd offer to ensure that problems are kept to a minimum?

I'm coming from a 1.6 Focus, so looking forward to the experience!

The cam belt change interval of 72k miles is now in question, the problem being the water pump bearings which can seize at mileages from 50k onwards and it takes out the cam belt. It effects a small proportion of 1.9 16v and 2.4 20v JTD engines, as a peace of mind thing I would recommend a belt and water pump change before 60K miles. Regular oil and filter changes, let the engine reach normal working temp before ragging it and it will give reliable long service.

Hey,

Thanks for the quick response. Is there a way to check if these have actually been done recently? Any tell-tale signs, for example.

I've got Palmers in Hemel Hempstead near me (I think they were St.Albans) so I could ask them to check, but it'd be easier if I can check it myself.

Other than that, I've heard AutoLusso near Luton and Jamie in Royston are the best bets for Independents near me...

Your belt will not have been changed yet if your car has been serviced as per AR schedule. Read through the thread it's quite informative.

Easiest way to check what has been done would be to carfully read through the service history assuming it has one. As already said if serviced to the AR schedule the belt will not have been done yet (due next). Personally for peace of mind I'd get it changed along with water pump. When I bought mine it had a full SH but hadn't actually had the belt done and that was at 80+k!

Enjoy, it will be a vast difference to a 1.6 focus!

Totally agree with these views. Many of the specialists will charge around £300 for the cambelt/tensioner/idler/waterpump job. Well worth it for peace of mind!
