I would like to purchase my next Alfa 156, however Its the JTD version, can you tell me which is the best engine to have 1.9 or 2.4 and which will give the best on MPG and anything to look out for on these JTD's.

1.9 better MPG but 2.4 has more power and sounds lovely...

on the 2.4 theres alot with knackered thermostats making them run cooland use more fuel... anything running less than 90degrees is a new thermostat time.... this could be the same for the 1.9 tho

the MAF (air flow meter) usualy dont work and same again, make the car use more fuel, and can make you believe the engine is serouisly under powered and even knackered (if the power doesnt put a smile on your face, change the MAF)

EGR system are rubbish and can slow the engine down and can make you worry about how much crap might be going in the engine....


apart from that they are very strong and reliable engines, and will most proberly will last longer than the car will:thumbs:

Driven normally, a 2.4 is little different on fuel compared to a 1.9.
The 16v 1.9 mjet goes a treat and is hardly any slower than my late 10v 2.4 - have both so, dont know which to choose apart from the 5pot sounding nicer. 20v mjets are ballistic !!!!

MAF is very easy... just 2 hose clips and 1 plug then pull

EGR is a few nuts and bolts and some cleaning the gung out or like in my case cutiing up 2 pieces of sheet steel to blank them off

the stat seems easy but it turns out to be a hard job.. you need double jointed fingers to get it off... its only a few bolts, but as a couple of the bolts are hiden its a hard to see what holds it on.... and as the stat shares the same bolt as the EGR cooler its hard to pull it off as the cooler has to be taken off first..... not a seriuos job just a ball ach

The thermostat change is a pain in the bum ... the stat is intertwined with the EGR system ... took my 4 hours :eek: :eek: ... I changed the radiator on my TS in less time than that!!!! :thumbs:

2.4 sounds great. I have the 20v facelift and although quick and torquey I wouldn't describe it as ballistic, but I guess it depends what your comparison point is. It's a 100bhp down on my last car with maybe slightly more torque, but then maybe I need to check my MAF?

One thing i can say though is that it is excellent performance for the fuel consumption. :D

It's true what they say about the thermostat. I changed mine last night. A pain of a job. Took me best part of 3 hours, although I didn't have EGR issues!?

Go 2.4 if you can. 1.9 if you can't find one. :thumbs:
