My 156's fuel gauge started acting up... Again!

I thought my 156 had suddenly developed a fuel thirst when I put R200 in yesterday, noticed the guage read low this morning and put in another R100 (after driving around 40km!) and then drove another 40km when the fuel light came on and the range warning displayed on the info center.

Anyone know a fix for this problem, besides replacement? The first time it was replaced under warranty when the car was a year old, around 2007 (The first one lasted a year!). The price I got at the time was R3400 including fitment when I enquired. On another forum they seemed to agree that this was a 156 problem. Anyone else experience this?

Mine is just very non-linear - it drops quickly to just below half, then slows down to 1/4 and it runs out before the needle touch the empty line. Oh and sometimes it takes about two minutes to realize I filled up before it goes back up to full.

Just watch the petrol tendants also!
Some pretend to put in R100, because the motorist before you also put in R100. So you think that you put new petrol in, and the tendant knows that you think you put it in, you know what I mean? Makes one think don't you think? :cheese:

Ok so here's how the fix worked: On Friday I left work at 2pm. Just got home when they called me back to sign two documents :)rant:) so I took the 156, but I drove it really "spiritedly" because I had no intention of spending Friday afternoon in peak hour traffic. As I took the offramp and sweeping turn off the N1 to Milnerton, I booted the throttle and felt the suspension go to work, and noticed the fuel level suddenly start rising, to halfway between half and quarter. While i was driving, the range display also went up from nothing, to 285km... The fuel gauge now works properly again.

So when i got home, I gave the wife a stern talking-to: "You HAVE to take her for a fast hooliganistic run through the mountains every now and again, it's an Alfa, they break if you don't..." :cheese:

I'm still planning to remove the level sensor, just to make sure everything is working as it should. It's just not that urgent anymore.
