Changed the engine in my 156 from a donor i bought.

Now the fan won't cut in (to be honest i'm not sure if it ever did,but i've never had a problem at MOT with it overheating!?

I can feel the relay clicking as i push it in but it only operate the fan for a seond as you plug it in.

The fan itself works as i can loop a wire in instead of the relay an it spins up fine.

Changed the sensor (the one on the on thermostat housing) with the one off the donor engine.

But the red light on the gauge will come on and no fan action!

Please what am i missing?!

Try a jumper wire between the two connections of the sensor/resistor on the rad housing. That way it will always run in high speed if the fan motor and relay is working correctly. When my resistor failed it stopped the fan running on either speed (it controls the lower speed).

Also, try pulling the thermostat sensor connection off. The ECU gets confused and runs the fan as it can't tell if it hot or cold.

If neither work it is possibly the relay as the motor works as you say.

I'll try swapping the sensor on the rad........the donor has one.

I've had the sensor wire off on the housing.....doesn't make it run. Would that make it and ECU problem? :wow:

Gaza82 your a legend.

Swapped the rad sensor on the car with the donor sensor (although it looks newer!)
Hit 90 and the fan came on!
Another little niggle out of the way........onto the next!

That isn't a sensor.
It is just a resistor to provide the low speed.
Without the resistor in the circuit it runs at full speed.

Ok sorry, resistor......

But it fixed it so call it what you like i'm happy!

With it broke it didn't work at all though-same as Gazza's.
I'm sure its that as i've tried it twice since and it comes on fine.

Thanks for your help guys!
