Bought the car on satuday with a failed MOT for:

Slightly over the limit HC
Lambda out of range
Large leak from middle box

On the motorway home I noticed the engine wasn't keeping temperature and I had a missfire/hunting when below 4k revs. I replaced the whole exhaust sysem cat back. I then replaced the thermostat. Few hours later and it's coughing and spluttering in every gear until you hit 4k revs and it takes off like it should.

Noticed last night that the air box lid had been bodged on and had allowed dirty air to bypass the filter. I have changed the MAF sensor for a Bosch unit and should be fitting with the repaired lid this afternoon.

I'm planning on servicing it this weekend as the plugs have not been changed yet and the car is on 63k miles.

Any ideas what else it could be? Only other thing I can think of is the lambda sensor as the car works perfectly over exactly 4k revs which is when the sensor goes open loop?

:edit: no fault lights show up

Well, it wasn't the maf. And it wasn't the plugs. Nor the coils. And there are no fault codes. This is starting to get expensive now...

Will check it tomorrow morning, otherwise its off to the specialist. My wallet has been raped this week and I've only had it a week!

How hard is the glovebox to get out? Not had a chance to mess with the interior yet.

Replacing the rear set of plugs wasn't too bad. Defo a two person job to get the manifold back on the rubbers!

Lambda it was! Replaced the wishbone and did an oil change at the same time. Person on ebay had sent me the wrong oil filter! Was the same just about 15mm longer. GRRR!
