Hi all,
after falling in love and buying the 4th car I saw, as I sit and look I find more and more things that need fixing...

i am too scared to drive the car until i get the cambelt changed,
i've had quotes from £200(local) to £450 (alfa dealer).
a specialist in Staines wants £270 + £60 to do the water pump as he advises to do it the same time. thats £330

the details as I bought the car Monday:
156 turismo 1.6 saloon 2002. black leather!
just under 40k miles FSH but at last service last owner didnt do cambelt due to cost. 5 stamps in book, couple of receipts.

do i need to do the water pump at 40k? he has offered to 'check' the airbag warning light for free and the electrical buzzing noise from the climate controls.
I would greatly appreciate any and all advice

I am getting mine done next week for £490 including the plugs and the variator (inc VAT) - I thought this wasn't a bad price, maybe I am wrong?

How far are you from this place;

http://www.alfaworkshop.co.uk/

They are very well thought of around the Alfa forums and usually have a special deal on cambelt changes.

my god you guys reply fast!

^a full service and cambelt for that price?
shame i am so far away!
i live near heathrow airport.
the staines specialist is called Thorobred, he seemed happy to give me a free inspection, i cant help but feel fear and paranoia for him giving me bad news
there was also a specialist in harrow, just as far.

anyone know where to get a second key cheaper than £180?

Think I posted this before but here are the costs I got from Heath Road garage for the cambelt costs:

Cambelt kit: £98
Cam cover: £22
Variator: £86 (WTF???)
Spark Plugs: £62 (optional)
Total: £268

Total cost plus labour = £490, so that is £222 for labour, which is approx £55 an hour - I was told it is about a 4 hour job.

I just got a quote from Alfaman harrow:
3hr labour £187.50
parts:
cambelt kit £88
water pump £25
sparkplugs £88
Variator £90
(forgot what this thing was...) £45
he advised i do the sparks at the same time... for that much extra?!
thats £525 for cambelt and sparks. the car's done almost 40k, new sparks so soon? i will only do 4k a year...

then he also wanted to add a service on t bump it up to £750...
i dont think i can afford alfaman. :(

*he also offered a free inspection too, and a 'de-sludging' of the engine as the 1.6 is so underpowered... free wheelbalancing and something that comes with wheel balancing... too much to remember, i feel like a child who understands nothing right now.

Less than 40k is a bit early for plugs, isn't it? (normally 60k). Is the water pump neccessary on a 2002 car? And the variator too, are you sure you need that needs replacing (diesel sound on startup)?

The above site (my local) has Alfa fixed price servicing at £380 for 36k service inc cam belt and stuff, labour and vat. I regularly do Cambridge to Egham, passing both Heathrow and Royston, and that takes about 75 mins (M25 permitting) so it must be less than hour from you.

The total cost probably includes VAT which you need to subtract to work out the labout cost. Allitalia in Wrexham's labout charge is £36 per hour excluding VAT.

wow thanks for all the replies,
Padders, I am far too scared to drive the car anywhere (lame for a new alfa owner, sorry) until i get the cambelt done. with my fantastic luck it will die on the way to staines. the engine is quiet on startup(not diesel) it is silent at idle compared to my G reg rover 414.

harrow alfaman said the sparks need doing at 36k and then 72k
i swear i read it needs it around 60/72k not before.

i asked the Thorobred garage if he would consider all these extra parts(variator/sparks etc) he thought i was a bit mad, telling me he would look at the sparks if i really want him to but would leave the variator alone until the next service at least!
now i just need to work out the buzzing noise.

this forum is excellent, everyone really communicates, does this place have a regular page to dicuss servicing, i didnt find one and think it would be a great guide to newbies like me.
