Hi there

Now the weather is hotting up, I've tried the air con on my 2004 156. I only bought it 3 weeks ago but I'm not sure it is working.

Hit the air con button and a light comes on, turn up the fan to full on cold but the air coming out is the same temp as outside.

Presumably I need to check the fuse etc before taking it to a dealer

Could you please let me know of a couple of checks I can do so I don't get there and find its something simple:thumbs:

Tried a search bit no clear advice for a sequence of checks

Looking forward to the advice
Chris

When you turn the aircon on can you gear a click from the engine bay? This is the unit starting up, if you can hear this but there is no cold air you may need a re gas.

Kwik-fit are still offering a re-gas AFAIK under the condition that if they cannot do it, you don't pay

Thanks for the quick reply. If I dont hear a click what's the next step?
Then there is a problem with the unit itself, fuse most likely. It's probably a regas issue though, if you don't hear the click at first, turn the air con switch on and off, the click can not always be easily heard over the sound of the engine. Good luck. Let us know the result.

you wont necessarily here a click.
If it is completely empty the compressor wont even engage.
Mine was completely empty of gas and i feared the worst.
Took it to quick fit. they charged it for 45 minutes and it now works fine.
the aircon is pretty poor in alfas though so dont expect it to freeze your nuts off.

Did the AC light come on when you were low on gas?

Most cars AC light won't come on if the pressure is too low/high, but then we are talking about Alfa!

It almost certainly needs a re-gas. You are supposed to use the aircon on a regular basis, even in winter, to keep it working. I've never really understood why and maybe someone on here can explain. But I've heard that it must be used for a minimum of 1 hour a month - something to do with joint seals? In my experience it's best to leave it on all the time and whatever you do, the system will probably need a re-gas every couple of years. The good news is that a re-gas is quick and fairly cheap. The bad news is that Alfa 156 aircon is pretty poor. It will be obvious when it is working though - there is a definite drop in air vent temperature. For best results, turn on aircon, turn to min temperature, press the air recycle button and turn up the fan speed a bit. Don't leave the air recycle button on for too long if there are a lot of people in the car though.

It is most likely that you just need a regas (as one of the other posters has said the air con selected light should only come on if it is physically engaged) ... personally I wouldn't take it to kwik fit, I've always used independant air-con specialists, after all it is likely that your car has never had the aircon serviced and it would be best to get this done ... which is not that much more than taking it to kwik fit (I get charged £50 last time mine was done ) ...

... also the advantage of taking to a independant air con specialist is that if there is anything wrong it is likely that they'll be able to fix it for you too

It never fails to amaze me how helpful this forum is!!!

Turned it on and off this monring. Heard a 'click' but sounded more like it was coming from underneath the steering column than the engine bay, definitely an electrical noise rather than mechnical.

The light turns on and off

I've got a kwick fit round the corner, apparently if they try the re-gas and it does not work then is free. If that's the case there's an air con specialist round the corner from work.

I will let you know what happens (Every time I search a thread you never get to hear what the result was!)

i know kwik fit get a slagging off, but when I took mine in, they vacuumed / pressure tested / re-gassed / checked AC temp & provided a print-out - for £45

The trouble with kwik fit is that when you go in you just never know what (who) you're going to get ... Jon you were one of the lucky ones ... I've heard nightmare stories of untrained kwik fit "technicians" trying to operate the air con equipment ...

OKay, will try a few and see what quotes I get.

Completely un related, I'm going to go for the Cruise control upgrade.

Is it best to use a good national mail order company for the stalk and cover or find somewhere local (west sussex?)

Who is the cheapest!!!!

Have to be honest, when I was looking for Cruise control (didn't bother getting it fitted in the end) I was just going to get the part from the main dealer ... if you send Donalds_Alfa (I think that's his user name) a PM then he'll be able to give you a 10% discount on the parts ... but then you've got to offset that against the postage costs ...
