I have a 2001 156 sportwagon 2.0TS.

Current problem is where the clutch does not fully disengage even when pushed fully to the floor. It has gone progressively worse over the last few weeks. Now can't get into gears without revving between gear changes. Booked in at service tomorrow.
Any ideas on what the problem is please?

Sounds like an air leak into the hydraulic system. That could be caused by a few things but chances are the slave cylinder could do with replacing.

Best case is the system just needs a bleed but if the slave needs replacing then never fear, its a cheap part and easily fitted.

Thanks for the advice Chris.

Took it in to the Alfa specialist at Heath Road Garage in Sandbach, where a bleed of the system did indeed cure the problem. I was only charged £10 for diagnosis and cure! It seems great now. No slack and the biting point is half way up.:)

I hope this is a long term solution though because Alfie told me that the slave cylinder on my 2001 model is inside the gearbox, which would need to be removed to fit. This is an all day job.

Update: Within 4 days the symptoms are returning, so have had to book in for a new slave cylinder (6 hours labour) and am getting the clutch replaced at the same time.
