I'm looking through my folder of invoices because it's time to change my car.

The 156,000 miles in my 147 1.6 Lusso has cost me £7,398.28 in garage bills. This is made up of:

Servicing and things that cropped up at that time (including some tyres): £4,735.82
Additional oil: £306.79
Tyres: £667.53
Other things e.g. bulbs, wipes, other garage repairs: £1,688.10

I have probably mislaid an odd invoice over the past 8 years of owning the car.

It's time for her to go. I am sad. I washed it today and it looks great for it's mileage. I'm even sadder that it's only now worth only a few hundred quid and looks like a lot more. I'm not complaining though, I bought it nearly new in 2002 for £12,995 and it's been a decent, reliable car.

Ouch...

Thats one reason why I try and get the spanners out myself as much as possible.

My dad has had some massive bills with his 33,000 miles Clio 182 so it isn't just Alfa's that swallow cash.

You not tempted to keep her after forking out so much? You'll only end up paying the same on the next car if you keep it for a few years? Unless of course you fancy an upgraded Alfa of course :) The great thing about Alfa's is they still look and feel great even when getting on a bit (so long as they've been looked after…)

You really think so? :confused::eek:

My 200SX cost me around £2k in the 3 years I owned it, but it was nigh 20 years old, so i can forgive it that. But a nearly new car costing almost a grand a year (before factoring in insurance, tax and fuel?!!!):eek:

I was fairly pleased, comparatively speaking, with the servicing costs etc. overall and the post was generally for information. I do around 20,000 miles per year and think that that's a key factor to take into account, perhaps more so than it's age. This was my first Alfa and I was cautious about switching from my previous 3 Peugeots (ooh can I get away with mentioning that on here?). I have no big complaints about the car's reliability or garage bills over the 156,000 miles.

Where did you get the servicing etc done? Was it main dealer, specialist or a local garage?

The AA average for servicing , repairs and tyres for the typical car is currently £700 per year.

Main dealer.

OK, but I reckon my mileage was nearly double the average so £700 x 8 years x 2 = £11,200. That makes me fairly happy.

Considering you used a main dealer, I don't think thats bad at all.

Adding everything up always brings a tear to your eye but in essence u've only spent about £900 per year.
