Afternoon all,

Not logged on for a while...but had the fright of my life last night when I was driving home from work on the M56 is the ****ing rain!

My wipers suddenly stopped.. ..not good when the rain is lashing down and yoru in teh 3rd lane. Managed to get myself over to the 1st lane and get home with very little visability (wouldn't recomment that move to anyone though!). Tried it again this morning and it's still playing up....working for a few wipes and stopping. Lucky for me it's not raining today.

Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone any ideas what it might be? Is it the motor that needs replacing?

I've rang my local indi and I'm popping it there 2moro so that he can have a quick look. But he hasn't got any 2nd hand motors and a new one will be approx £200!

Any suggestions to where I can get myself a 2nd hand one, or would it be better to purchase and fit a new one otherwise would the same thing happen again.

Any advice appreciated...and no one doing any rain dances please:lol:

Do you have the automatic wiper function in place of the intermittant setting?

I have had problems in the past when using the wipers in the auto position. After a few strokes they were shorting out (remedied temporarily by restarting the engine - however it would always re-occur). Had someone look at it but they couldn't find a problem. Trial and error and a few hairy moments taught me that by switching them straight to the slow speed constant setting, and straight to the off position again when finished with them i wouldn't have any problems.

After a long time i tried the auto setting again, and eventually after working OK for a number of weeks they started shorting out again. Now i just bypass the auto setting and make do without any intermittant setting at all, which is a bit of a pest but they work.

Also, every now and again (roughly once a month) my wipers will swipe over just the once when in the off position.

Have the wipres cut out completely or are they left struggling really badly? A few years back I had a problem with the wipers on an astra. When you turned them on, they'd just about manage to move a little and then stop dead. If you turned them off for a few seconds and back on, they'd do the same. I stripped it down and took the motor out and tested it, it was fine, put it back in and everything worked. I was confused at first but then realised that the earth connection from the motor was badly corroded where it screwed onto the body. Undoing the screw and refitting it caused some of the corroded metal to flake away and re-established the electrical connection. I gave the connector and screw a quick rub of emory paper and had no further trouble.

It could be something as simple as this. If it's the motor, e-bay is your friend, there's lots of alfa's being broken, most don't list all the parts but if you contact the seller, they'll put it up for you.
