Just bought a 2001 147 T Spark Lusso within 4 miles the engine warning light had come on and says Motor Control System Failure. I know the manual says to go straight to the garage. Can anyone give me any further info please?

Same thing happened to me, could be many things, diagnostic told me lambda 2 sensor failure, treated with fuel injection cleaner and within 2 weeks the warning disappeared. Would start with a diagnostic first though.

I had similar with mine not revving past 3k, I'd disconnected the camshaft sensor during some work I did, forgot to reconnect it and got the engine lamp, connected it again and all was fine.

If you can get a cable and copy of fes, you can see if yours is broken

Sounds like your MAF may have failed. You need to get the car to an indie specialist to get the fault codes read.

or speak to Rarebear and order one of his modified cables and download the free ECU software. Will give you the ability to read errors yourself without having to pay each time.

The ability to read codes is essential for any Alfa Owner

Thanks for the guidance, i have spent some time now removing sensors and stuff. i managed to get the failure signal and the engine management light to not come on by removing the lambda sensors but it still ran a little rough although better. i took it for a small run to see how it would perform, after about 5 mins i had to stop for another car and the engine stalled. after firing it up again the motor control system failure came on again, it is still running better but not as it should.

i took the MAF apart and the sensor inside looked like it was in pretty good nick, the engine also seemed to run slightly better with the air intake pipe disconnected up to the MAF.

again any help would be much appreciated, thanks

Did you try running the car with the MAF disconnected ( the electrical connection ) ?
If so how did it drive ?
Best not to feed the MAF unfiltered air btw

Same with me. Bought car from garage last night and within 2 or 3 miles the warning light came on. Revs fine at a standstill but no power when moving.

@ davffc. I haven't tried running with the maf disconnected yet. I have just ordered a cable and have downloaded fiatecuscan, hopefully this will help too.

Question though can you clear the codes with the free version?

I've just had the warning light come on this afternoon, could it be to do with a poor connection at the battery, as the car has been struggling to start from cold for a few weeks...

Yes the free version of FES will clear codes - but unless the fault is/are fixed they will just come back.
A failing MAF often wont show an error code anyway.
Try unplugging it and driving it - only takes 5 secs to unplug

Update on my troubles.
just been outside to clean the battery terminals, to see if that would cure the problem, cleaned them, tightened everything back up, no change.
Just about to throw in the towel and call the AA and I thought I would take the connector off the MAF/airflow meter, just to see if it was a dodgy connection. did that and the warning light went straight out when I cranked the engine up!
The only downer is I now have to reset the date and clock lol!

Taken car to local Alfa specialist in Derby, and they've just rang and said it's the camshaft sensor that's shown up as the fault, and it's gonna cost 500 quid to fix as he has to replace the camblet to get at it....
So as you can imagine, not a happy bunny as we were planning to go away for Christmas, doesn't seem like that's gonna happen now....
