For many months now I have had a persistent clunk which appears to come from the nearside front suspension. The noise is quite loud and is definitely related to uneven road surfaces and potholes (of which there are many around here).

I've had the upper arms replaced on both sides twice now with no success. The anti roll bar has been replaced too. During this time it's been fully serviced (including cam belt) and MOT'd, but the noise still persists.

I have read a few similar threads here but I still haven't found an answer to this particular problem.

Any ideas anyone?

yeah mine seem to do the same, there is a specialist coming to look at my car tomorrow and i will tell him about it. I will let you know what he says and that might give you an idea.

Have you changed your bottom ball joint? The drop links can rattle too.:). You've done the top wishbone and the anti roll bar so that would rule thes out

@Alan, Thanks - I'd be grateful for any thoughts from him.
@Joss - I'll check about the ball joints and drop links but I think the answer is no - they've not been replaced.

It has also been suggested to me that it might be the shock absorber - this was also my original thought to my non mechanical mind. Is that too obvious?

Cheers,
SR

@Alan
Hi, Did you get any resolution to this on your 147? The more this goes on the more convinced I am that this is not the suspension but something else loose, maybe the gearbox mounting. :confused:

Have you found anything else out about this. I have a 156 but i imagine it would be along the same lines. I am leaning towards the shock or the cheap wishbones i fitted to mine.

Hi, I haven't had the time (or cash) lately to investigate further but the shock has also been suggested to me. I can't believe it's the wishbones as they've been changed 3 times and are Alfa parts. Hoping to get up to SDR with it soon so they can have a look.

Update - I eventually did get this sorted, by SDR and not the local tyres/exhusts/brakes/suspension dealer who I had used previously. It was the anti roll bar and drop joints. Had the brakes done all round too, and a few other niggles. What with a 84k service and a new air control meter it wasn't cheap, but they were fair with the invoicing. The guys in the workshop there are very good - recommended.

Anti roll bar. Suspension bushes...these are essentially made out of balsa wood on most alfas and fall apart, turning every molehill you drive over into a mountain. I didn't realise how bad they had got on my 1.6 till I sold it and got my 2.0L 147..but basically the ride just gets steadily more and more "crashy".

i had a loud knocking noise coming from my 156 too, couldn't find any issues with the suspension at all, turned out to be the plastic undertray flapping about, needless to say i was pretty relieved about that.
