Hi all, had my 1.6 147 manual since July. The day I drove it home I noticed it crunched into third when revving fairly high and avoided third for most of the drive home...

It still does it sometimes if I'm not careful but driving back up to Yorkshire from London on new year's day I noticed it popping out of 3rd a few times. Mostly seems to be when I let out the clutch and mostly when changing down to third.

It has only popped out of gear 5-7 times in three days and on this morning's drive to work I held the stick when I went into third briefly before chugging along in fourth, but now reading some more threads on this problem I've scared myself silly and don't think I'll use third at all until it's fixed.

Checked on here and seems that it's a very common thing with the syncro sleeve wearing out.

Of those of you who have had this problem, generally speaking how bad is it for the wallet? Does avoiding 3rd early on help or is it pot luck if you'll need just the syncro sleeve replacing instead of the entire gearbox?

P.S. I don't know how long it had been crunching but since I bought it I have done 4k, if that makes any difference....

Thanks in advance for any help!

It's dead, the synchro sleeve on 3rd gear is screwed you need a new one.

Exact same thing on my old 1.6 ended up with a new gearbox, started off not centring properly, then started crunching going into 3rd then started popping out of 3rd when under load then finally wouldn;t stay in 3rd at all.

If your's went through these stages then it's time for a new syncchro if your lucky, on mine particles of metal had actually got into the gearbox oil creating a lapping paste and gradually wore the bore of the selectyor shaft meaning the only economical thing to do was get a recon gearbox in there.

Hope yours is fixed more easily.

Whereabouts in West Yorkshire are you?

Alfatech in Huddersfield should be able to sort for a reasonable price.

Oh balls :(

Do you reckon avoiding third from now on will mean it doesn't get any worse or is it already too late once it's started jumping out of gear?

Also can you recommend an Alfa specialist in W/Yorks? Closest to me is Alfatech in Huddersfield, near the stadium - but I've not had any mechanical work done by them yet. Only other place I've been is main dealer in Bailiff Bridge (Brighouse) because I wasn't aware of any one else at the time and needed the variator done by a specialist....

As I said above ;) Alfatech should be able to sort it for you cheaply, I;ve used them for about 4 years on both my GTA and the Brera

Once it starts crunching it's all downhill, thats the point of no return.

The 147 box and 156 gearbox for a 1.6 are the same its simply a matter of changing the top external linkage, so the box can be had quite cheap .I can vouch for antman he is a genuine chap with good spares.
