After having only done about 700miles in my 147 it gave up on gears whilst driving home on friday.

Car was recovered to PVS in Nottingham they are not Alfa specialists so I may call them on Monday and direct them to the selespeed guides posted here.

Car drove fine from Birmingham to Nottingham, then when I came off the motorway (fully warmed up) when I pulled away on the roundabout it dropped from first into N.
Would then not reselect 1st or any other gear with the engine running. Just beeps and stays in N.
With the engine turned off I can go through all the gears 1-2-3-4-5 N and R without any problems.
After waiting a while creating a mini traffic hazard on a Friday afternoon I tried to pull off. 1st gear selected and pulled off, but then when I tried to change up it just dropped into neutral. Waited tried again same thing happens.

While waiting for the recovery wagon had a look under the bonnet. The selespeed oil is on the minimum mark.

Have ordered a diagnostic cable which will turn up next week.

Hopefully it will just need oil topping up and clutch rod adjustment check.

Anyone experienced the same thing? Or have any advice other then the guides in the stickys and the diagnostic here Alfa Romeo Selespeed - Home

Thanks in advance

yes, I have had a similar case.
Could be a weak battery if it works when the engine is off.
You really need to connect to a computer to know.

All seems to be working again

Picked the car up today, I left a swathe of info from the selespeed thread on things to look at by the garage.
They ended up adjusting the clutch position and it seems to be fine again now.:)
Although why it degraded in the first place is another question, could be that my clutch is on the way out.
Now I have rarebears cable I'll hook it up tomorrow and see what the clutch pin was adjusted to.
Is it worthwhile carrying out an EOL routine after the clutch has been adjusted?

Also going to use Fiat EcuScan as Alfadiag gets cleansed by my AV, and the latest version is oldish so not sure whether I can trust it or not.

same problem with my 147's gear box! pls help!!

I just bought a hot 147 a couple of months ago but just started really driving it around longer distances! i took it yesterday to get a service because it was driving bumpy and kinda sluggish. After the service the car drove a lot better. Today iv been experiencing some problems that lead me to be stuck at a set of lights at a busy intersection.

I noticed a problem when i started the car and went to take off from home and i couldn't get it into first gear! it would only stay in neutral and putting it in reverse was not an issue. i looked up on the dash board and the gears were skipping all over the place! from 2nd to 5th from 4th to 3rd and so on.. finally got it in first then took off. later on today i went to leave again.. again i couldn't get get in in first.. it would stay in neutral and only could use reverse. i finally got it working and it would do the same thing all over! even when i put it in city mode!

i just joined alfaowner to get some advice!

What is going on??? im not driving it anywhere cause im afraid i might get stranded somewhere!

The thing is i just got it serviced! i think it has to be their fault!!
Also i know nothing about cars let alone the complex technology in alfas!!

What should i do? ill take any suggestions please!!!!

Thanks!

first off I would ensure the contacts are clean, there is a big connector block between the battery and the engine, separate that and squirt electrical contact cleaner in there and clean up, do the same for the relay (similar location) and try to pop the sensors off the selespeed actuator one at a time and clean them too.

Was the garage a proper Alfa specialist, did they hook it up to the diagnostic and clear any errors, perform resets, calibrations etc?

no they were not alfa specialists! i needed to get it serviced asap because we were going to go on a long distance drive. so thats why i rushed into doing it.. big mistake! i got no idea what they did but im thinking they probably hook it up the diagnostic.. the car is supposed to be going to alfa romeo in 2days.. i hope it wont be really expensive to fix.. iv got a mate thats a mechanic and he said he could hook it up to the computer for me and diagnose the problem.. the only thing is if i get the car towed all the way out to him and they don't have the equipment to fix it then im back in square one..

Do you think it is really serious?

thanks for you advice!
