I've had my 147 selespeed since new from 2001 and am having problems with the car neutralising. Not sure if this is what it's called, but basically when coming to a stop the car will sometimes go into neutral and not allow any gears to be selected.
I've had a new actuator installed, my gearbox stripped and put back together and also the computer changed.
Each time i get the car back from the mechanic it is working fine for about 1000km and then the problem starts again.
Even the mechanic is unsure as to what the problem can be.
When the car has the problem, the only way to get it to select 1st gear again is by continually turning the car on/off until first is selected again.
Sometimes this can take up to 20mins.
When trying to go into 1st gear you can hear the box trying but unable to engage gear. It's almost like a 'clunking' sound when this is happening.
Does anyone have any idea as to what it can be?
Is there something that my mechanic is missing?

Change the pump, it's struggling, overheating and jaming then when cooled down able to pump again. You'll probably be getting a pump driver relay fault too.
I've had the pump changed already. This was prior to the actuator being changed.
I'll mention this to my mechanic anyway.
The pump driver relay fault, should this be shown in the examiner?
When connected to the examiner it shows no error. It has never shown a single error throughout the entire process. Even directly after the fault has occurred?
If anyone can point me in even the slightest direction of fixing my problem i will be grateful.
To recap, my car will neutralize whilst driving and is most common when coming to a stop.
Whilst driving the gear indicator will flash the current gear (which tells me there is a problem) and then it will skip gears when changing.
For example, the other day only 1st, 3rd and 5th gear would engage. I had to double shift up/down through gears 2 and 4 as those gears would no be selected.
When my car is stuck in neutral, i can't select 1st or reverse.
The only thing i can do is continually try and turn the car on/off until i can select 1st gear again.
The following have been newly fitted since fault first occurred:
* Actuator
* Pump
* Clutch
* Computer
The gearbox has been stripped and 'no fault found'. The selector shaft has been replaced (in case) as the gearbox was already opened.
As of late, my airbag light will keep coming on.
This was never happening, but for some reason it will come up now.
Each time the airbag fault is cleared it will come up again within a few days.
The airbag light has turned on whilst car neutralised.
Does anyone have any idea as to what the fault can be?
Today was the last chance my car got. I neutralised on a one way road with a semi trailer behind me.
So F%^&ING dangerous and my mechanic has no idea!
Today my car dropped into neutral as per normal when coming to a stop.
What happens is as im slowing down preparing to stop (in 2nd gear) the car starts to shudder. (It's as if i'm driving a normal manual and not keeping the clutch pressed as i'm stopping)
When i'm stopped it goes into 1st gear (as is supposed to) but it feels like the car wants to accelerate off. If i take my foot off the brake the car will creep forward and then go into neutral.
From this point i've no chance of getting the car into 1st or reverse gear. It is simply stuck in neutral.
Today was different though. After trying to restart the car for about 5 mins it then decided not to start at all.
Was this due to the car being stuck in gear? 1st or 2nd even though the dash was showing neutral?
I just read about the selespeed clutch rod adjustment using AlfaDiag. Would this have anything to do with my fault, or is it another thing completely?

The clutch rod adjustment is crucial to selespeed cars, I've had some issues like yours in my car. But not this much. Did it happen sometime when your warming up the car in the morning and try to select first gear, the car keeps trying and trying to select it and at the end it doesnt?
I would think someone with an Examiner system would understand the clutch rod setup, it is a fundimental adjustmen to the selespeed...
I hope in one respect it is out of adjustment as it should sort you out, on the other hand you have spent and changed alot of time, money and part on a check that takes very little time to sort out...
After everything that has been changed on my car i am certain it is something minor that is causing me so much grief.
If it is the clutch rod setup that is causing me this i will be upset as i spent $$$$'s for no reason.
But on the other hand at least i know i have a practically brand new car again!
Hi. would be worth a check on the body earths down by the battery also the one on the battery earth and the one just down on the o/s cross rail support it,s just down by the side of the radiator/a/c condensor pig to see but the earth is off the multiple earth type also make sure your connectors in auxcillary fuse box in the engine bay are clean and tight as this is where your pump relay is for the selespeed system is located, iv,e had problems with just about all of these in the past. Hope some of this helps
First of all I would have him check that the battery terminals are tight (tighten the 10mm bolts), the brake lights work when the car refuses to select gears (Brake pedal switch or ABS ECU/Pump replacement required), the pressure graph isn't a saw tooth with the pump priming every few seconds (Accumulator change), and that you don't have EV sensor errors (clean/replace respective sensor and set clutch/calibrate).
Mechanic is convinced the actuator is causing the problem.
Originally bought a new actuator and that failed. Another Actuator was installed and 1000km later it failed.
A New Actuator has been fitted and so far 150-200kms of driving have had no problem.
Not holding my breath though.
Another question:
Have received rarebear's alfadiag cable (Thanks rarebear!) and hooked it up.
My clutch actuator position is at 27.38mm.
From what i have read it needs to be between 28 - 28.5mm, is this right?
I'm using Alfadiag version 3.4.
Should i adjust this?
I had already told my mechanic about this and he said it was checked.
also check the actuator main cable/switch, next to the battery, it might have dry wires, if this is the case, the cable makes a lot of errors and they are NOT recognized on alfadiag.......good luck
I'll be interested following this. I have the same problem at the moment.
