When the ignition is on (engine on or off, doesn't matter) I can hear a loud buzzing/humming noise from behind the centre console, at first I thought it was the cd whirring round in the cd player, but it seems to be lower down, from behind the heater control switches.

Any ideas?

No, the noise is there with everything turned off, air con, fan, radio....

Is it easy to take the front panel off? so I can look behind the fan controls?
I can't see any screws so is it just a case of carefully levering the front off??

There's a small fan on the 156 for checking the cabin temp ... it's behind the small circular grill to the left of the panel. Could be the motor on that is getting noisy.

Taking the console out shouldn't be difficult but can be fiddly as you need to remove radio (code!?!) and ashtray. Once out you'll see several screws behind radio, ashtray, and under gear lever gaiter, and two small hex screws behind radio.

I'm assuming the 147 and 156 are same!!
