Ive currently owned my 147 1.9 Jtdm (150) for about 8 months. I bought it from an Alfa dealership so i managed to also get one years warranty. The car is a 57 plate and currently done 42k miles, of which ive done 13k in since I got it.

The car recently went into the garage and after numerous checks the following was replaced:

  • Both front arms
  • both front brushes
  • egr valve
  • driveshaft replaced
My handbrake cable has also split, but to the point where it doesn't need replacing yet. And I've also got uneven wear to one of my brake pads.

The car was running fine for a couple of weeks, until a fault developed on the clutch. There's no pressure on the clutch for the majority of the movement and biting point is really low. So its going back in for ANOTHER checkup.

I need my car as I travel 70 miles a day to get to work, but I'm really struggling with the fact that it has to keep going in for repairs.

My heart tells me to keep the car, but with only 3 months of warranty left I don't think I can afford to repair it from my own pocket. Has anyone had any similar experiences?

You could buy any car and have reliability issues.
Over the last few years Ive had 2 x Audi's, one had electrical issues, one gearbox failed.
I see dozens of Mercedes broken down at the side of the road in my weekly commute to Bradford.
Its completely the luck of the draw.

IMO if the garage are replacing all these items the car should be good for another few thousand miles before anything else goes wrong, keep it till something else starts going then trade it in.

To be brutally honest.... If I needed a car for high mileage daily use, the last car I would consider would be an Alfa out of warranty.
If it was a cheap banger I'd take a gamble maybe.

Oh I dunno, I do a 70 mile round-trip commute. Had the GT for 3.5 years and I've only ever had to leave it at home once and take Mme. Pub's car, that was owing to finding the window not quite closed on a rainy morning (it had to be didn't it?) and all efforts to close it resulting in it openning further... had to throw a sheet of plastic over it and leave it on the drive. Disconnecting the battery that night for 20 mins or so and a window reset cured it.

Other than that it's only been maintenance....lot's of it. The EGR is a PITA, been off/on that often I knackered the bolts and had to replace with studs, the front suspension is a joke, needs changing as often as the oil. I currently have in the garage Bilstein B8 shocks, Eibach Pro Springs and Eibach ARBs to go on when it's a bit warmer, mind you I'll still be left with the lousy upper/lower wishbones, droplinks etc that will no doubt require changing before long.

It's true Alfa's are more work than most others, you have to do more than simply put fuel in them between services. If you're not handy with a spanner and you're unlucky enough to have bought a troublesome one.... you're in for a bumpy ride.

I have had a fair few Alfa's and they have all been pretty reliable...

As long as the previous owner has kept on top of maintenance you should be fine, however if a previous owner has run the car on a shoestring, then traded it in that is where you will get problems.

That is true of any make of car though, but Alfa's do tend to suffer more than most when neglected.

Hmmm...
Ford zetec cambelt change - 10 years or 100k miles (I would change at 80k) £150ish from local independant. It probably would last 100k miles though.
Alfa cambelt twice weekly and bite your tongue while getting shafted on the price.
Same goes for suspension, brakes and most other service items.

I love alfas, I really do but when my mates ask about the Alfa experience I always try to talk them out of it. Unless service/repair costs dont bother you or youre a dab hand with the spanners I wouldnt bother.

Well after owning lots of cars over the years (maybe 20+ if i sat and counted) and having this Alfa for a year its been better behaved than my Vectra and I recon after the next couple of weeks It will have cost me the same over a year but I have had twice the fun and for the first time in years I enjoy driving again!

Hmmmm.. ok so one garage had looked at it....

Take it to another dealer maybe a known good one and pay them to check it over.... But they may find something else that needs done....

That way you maximise the amount of stuff you can get changed on warranty :) maybe underhanded but it may not be such a bad idea.

I would keep it and see how you go... If you always use good wishbones TRW or Alfa they should last nicely (never fit cheap ones). If looked after and serviced the chances are it will do ok for you....

This is a forum so generally we only hear when someone needs help or had a problem....

We've owned this car for about 2 years now and travelled over 40,000km, including a 3000km round trip to Italy. The cars going in for its 160,000km (100,000 mile) service + cambelt change in a couple of days and has been close to 100% reliable. The only thing thats needed replacing, apart from bulbs and 2 front tyres, was the turbo tube that was split.

The car has been well cared for with a full service history from a good mark specialist and we don't drive it too hard. I've heard that the jtds are very reliable though I would make sure that the cambelt has been changed on time along with the water pump. The water pump can fail prematurely throwing the cambelt with expensive consequences. That aside, it's a great car, nice looking, quick with plenty of diesel shove and 50mpg fuel consumption.

Sounds like you've had some bad luck but maybe all the dodgy parts were replaced on our car before we bought it!

Sorry to hear about your 147 troubles mate. You might just find after all the repairs you've done, she'll run for years without a hiccup. Or you've just bought a pup...difficult to tell.

I got my 147 JTDm some two years back, second-hand, 2007 model. I have had ONE thing go wrong - the passenger seat's sun visor spring is loose so it won't stick against the roof of the car. And that's it. And I do 85km each day on weekdays.

All the best for the future, hopefully you make the right choice...maybe she treats you well after all the repairs :)

Thanks for the replies! Heard back from Alfa and its bad news on the clutch.

The pressure plate has worn causing the clutch pedal arm to bend and damage the slave cylinder, which has led to damaged seals and a fluid leak. Problem is that because its caused by 'wear and tear', the only thing covered on the warranty is the slave cylinder.

Car has reached 5 years as well, so gonna have to do the cambelt and waterpump this year, too. Think im definitely gonna keep the car until the warranty runs out in may, and hopefully this is my last issue!
