Hi guys,

after a year and 9000 TROUBLE FREE miles my 57 plate 147jtdm is up for it's 12000 mile service - it's actually done 17000 miles now.

I bought it as an ex-demonstrator from Wilsons Alfa in Essex, and I can honestly say I've enjoyed every drive in it, and it still looks neat and new.

Wilsons Alfa sent me a note to prompt to book it in, but I'm just wondering what the Alfisti reckon about the pros and cons going to an independent Alfa garage with this service? Or is it still under warranty? What difference does this make?

Wilsons have quoted £490, is this a fair amount? I'd like to spend less if I can, obviously.

Sorry if these seem obvious questions, only this is my first "new-ish" car, used to drive 20 year old classics before, so I've never had to deal with this situation before.

Thanks for all advice!

Er...sorry to tell you this, but even if your car was under warranty, you have probably invalidated it by failing to observe the service intervals. Any new Alfa is under warranty for 3 years from the date of registration, the first two years are manufacturer's warranty and ther last year dealer's. But, the warranty is guaranteed on condition you look after the car by servicing it at +/- 1000 miles or +/- 1 month of an interval of a year (whichever comes first) of the 12000 mile service interval and it being carried out an an Alfa approved dealer.

So, by my reckoning, your 57 plate has at least 8 month's dealer's warranty left but Alfa may not honour it because you are so far beyond the 12k service. If that's true by all means go to an independent but I used to pay about £320 for a service so your quote is steep. This may not matter too much to you as long as your car stays trouble-free. But, being an Alfa, you can't be that lucky! Therefore go to an Alfa dealer and beg forgiveness!
