i want to get my cambelt done as when i got the car it's got no service history, so thought to play it safe and get it done soon as possible. been given a quote from bensport alfa based in Ilton, Somerset for the cambelt, balance belt, tensioner, idler and waterpump for £412-32. is that a good price? or is there cheaper place's around my area?

I live in the area and I'd recommend Lui's Autos in Somerton. 01458 274499.

Alfa, Fiat & Lancia specialist. They don't need to advertise so you probably haven't heard of them. Anything I can't do on our Alfas I get Lui to do it.

I can't say if they'll be cheaper but can say I'm impressed with them and that they are top blokes.

I take it you have a 2 litre twin spark as you mention the balance belt. You will want to get the variator done as well. You could leave the water pump unless it's a high mileage model but then again you could do it anyway as preventative maintenance. I would also do the auxiliary belt and tensioner while you are there.

^^^ what he said, I tend to reccomend the waterpump and aux belt every second cambelt, (assuming they look and work OK) but if you dont know the history - thats out the window

it is a 2 litre engine and thought to do the lot as the car had no service history, it's done 61K already, so if the cambelt hasn't been done it's a big risk of failing. i haven't checked the state of the belt at the mo but will be having a quick look at the weekend. the waterpump and variator are working fine and no major rattle sounds.

Can highly recommend the guys at Bensport. they're doing my balance belt and tensioner next week - I bought my car last year and the trader had the cambelt done for me but has no record of the balance belt being done - not worth the risk so getting it changed now.

Bensport can do the whole lot on a 2 litre (inc variator and waterpump and the three belts + tensioners/idlers) for around £500-£550 .

The cambelt must have been done at least once already but you're right to do it again as you don't know the date/mileage.

The variator in particular could fail at any time as you have no record of it ever being changed. If it did fail you would have to take the belts off again to replace it so that's why it's recommended to change it when you get your belts done. It might be fine now but not might not be in a months time. I know it's expensive but I'd advise you get it done however of course it is upto you.

i will get the lot changed and will use bensport. as i think i got a good price, seeing the parts will cost just under £400 if i do it myself!

The variator if not making any noise may not need replacing and its not the hardest of jobs to change if its in need of a change in the near future.Im NOT trying to put a spanner in the works but keeping cost down.

Not the hardest of jobs maybe, but it does require removal of the camshaft and it will mean new belts again, so not worth the saving.
With no record of belt changes it makes sense to get cam belt/balance belt/aux belt inc all tensioners/variator and waterpump.

finally got round to booking it in to get the cambelt, aux belt, balance belt, idler, tensioners, water pump and variator with bensport for £510 which is pretty good!
