Hi, hope someone can help... I was driving my 147 JTD 16V multi jet (don't know if that last bit makes a difference) today when the car lost all power. The warning of side light failure (which I get every other week!!) changed to something like "control system failure" (may have been engine control failure) or words to that effect. The engine died completely and will not start. When I can get the car towed home (tomorrow I hope) I will try the ECU re set as described on here, but most say that their cars still start and drive or go into safe mode. I don't know if I'm just "lucky", but mine would definately not start!! The battery is not great, but always starts the car ok and turned it over for 7 or 8 tries to re start over half an hour or so before I gave up and walked... In the rain... very cold... and very *******&d off!
Any ideas greatfully received.:confused::cry:

If it is very cold around you. Check your engine bay for smell of diesel fuel...if there is any such around your high pressure fuel pump (located just a front of your drivers seat...near cam.belts on the engine itself).

Before checking, try to start the car....

Do you get the error message before you start ie Ignition on or after startup attempt
Strangely, I don't get any error message now. Only got the error while driving (as the car lost power and cut out).
Didn't reallyu think about it, but no error message when I tried to re start, enginge turned over and over without even a splutter.

Turns over but won't start

I've done the ECU re set proceedure now and the car still won't start (at least I've got it towed home now!). There is no error message to do with not starting either on ignition on or after cranking (although I still get the side light failure (surpise surprise!) and now also get water in diesel filter error too (have often had this before, but has never caused starting problems).
It turns over and over, but not even a cough or a splutter. At ignition on, you can hear the familiar whine of the pump pressuring up and it was topped up with diesel yesterday, so I know there is fuel in the tank.
I'm at a loss... please help!

Check to see if the inertia switch has not cut off fuel suppy-left front footwell ,although it would usually show a fault code. When you turn ignition on does the engine light illuminate?

Hi there

I drive the same car and the multijet has more bhp than a standard JTD 1.9.

What's the mileage? Has the waterpump + cambelt been done yet. There can sometimes be problems at before they are technically due to be changed. I sought advice on AO regarding this.

I've only had the car 6 months, so I'm not sure about diesel filter or water pump.. will check service documents. Cam belt was changed at 70ish K miles. Car now done 130K.
I will check the inertia switch, but now warning message about it and the car was running and stopped while I was driving it, so I don't think it will be that.
Anybody in Lincolnshire / Spalding area with diagnostic eqpt that would be willing to have a look? I might even stretch to a few quid! lol... I would of course cover any costs and add a pint or two to them... Still going to be less than Alfa prices!

I had a similar thing with my old CF2 156 JTD and it was the crankshaft sensor iirc, is this a possibility on the 147 Mjet?

I had exactly the same problem with my 156 JTD 16v, EGR valve stuck open, dumping all the incoming air straight down the exhaust leaving insufficient for combustion to take place. Either clean or blank off EGR (do a search, as there's a good guide somewhere on here).

Fixing the EGR is covered here - they may be better guides.

What you describe doesn't sound like the EGR though. when mine failed it would start perfectly but there was no power until the engine was doing 2500 rpm when either gas pressure forced the valve shut or there was so much gas flowing that the valve made no difference.

I suppose if the EGR failed fully open it might prevent the engine firing but it seems unlikely.

I know a good Alfa Specialist in Grimsby - prices are really good :)

Mine definately wouldn't start with the EGR stuck open. Had been exactly as you decribe prior to that, but eventually gave up altogether. When the EGR was removed there was a 'ball' of carbon preventing the valve closing.

Update... Cam belt is snapped... That'd explain why it won't start! ... Anybody know anywhere near Spalding to get my engine sorted for less than mega bucks?
