Spent most of last night reading up on key problems and i'm more confused than ever ! My situation is i have one fully working alarm and immobiliser remote key fob for my 2000 W 1.8 ts. no master key or code card. and also an uncut /unprogrammed blank bought from ebay ( this is the non remote type and i presume would be programmable to disarm the immobiliser only)
Does anybody have any 100% answers?
Is there an affordable solution?

If you contact Tony at Datarecall Services he will be able to provide you with a new master key...

Datarecall Services

You will have to send him the CODE immobiliser ECU from your car. It's located behind the trim panel to the right of your steering wheel. See the 1st and 2nd pictures of the following post for it's exact location (the yellow box directly below the top black box in the stack)...

Quick question on keys.
If you have 2 red keys and only use one of the red keys all the time. Eventually will the other key loose its memory (programming)??
If yes, should you alternate between keys every few months?

No it won't. The code for the each of the keys is retained permanently in non-volatile memory of the CODE immobiliser ECU. Therefore you don't need to alternate between the keys.

Contacted datarecall, and tony suggested getting my working key copied, then sending the original to him to be read . Just been to local shoe repairers/key cutters with the the blank i bought off ebay for a fiver, and they cloned the immobiliser transponder and cut the blank for a fiver. Both keys now open locks and start car!
I'm still confused by all the 'opening memory and loading keys' buisness that has been mentioned , are these to do with the alarm system? Have i let myself in for further problems having a cloned key?,will they both continue to work indefinately? and can i now get someone to 'read' the alarm signal and program a separate key fob for the alarm/central locking?
Still confused by all the contradictary information available on the net!!

The "opening of the memory" refers to the alarm / central locking only. The immobiliser and the alarm / central locking are two completely separate systems. The remote key contains both a transponder chip for the immobiliser and also a separate circuit board for the remote alarm / central locking operation.

As your spare key doesn't have remote control capabilities, you won't be able to get it to work your alarm or central locking. If you want a key to do that, you will need one with built-in remote control circuit, however you will then face the issue of actually being able to program it to your alarm/ central locking system without the 4-digit code needed to open your remote receiver for programming. This is where Tony can help as he can temporarily open your remote receiver for programming (you will need to send him the remote receiver unit located in the roof just in front of your rear view mirror). This will allow programming of new keys against the remote receiver until the alarm / central locking has been operated 255 times after which the remote receiver will then lock itself again and prevent any further programming operations. This is no problem though and will give you sufficient time to program in a new key. Don't forget that you will still need to also get that key coded to the immobiliser as a separate procedure (i.e. by cloning as before or by obtaining a master key for your immobiliser).

Just an add on to this, I can now read the remote code directly from a working remote, so needing just the old key if available. If not available then the receiver is needed. Also got plenty of transponders for cloning uses.
Cloned keys work exactly like originals and are reliable.

WOULD THE SQUARE BLACK REMOTE FOBS AVAILABLE ON EBAY BE PROGRAMMABLE FOR ALARM/CENTRAL LOCKING ON MY 2000 REG 145 ,FROM MY WORKING REMOTE KEY? Item number: 220261508108.
I ALREADY HAVE A SOLID RED KEY CUT AND CLONED FROM THE WORKING ORIGINAL TO OPERATE DOORS MANUALLY AND START CAR

No...it won't work with your car. The square black fobs are for the Infra-Red alarm systems used on the older cars (these cars have a 'dome' IR pickup eye on the bottom of the remote receiver unit). Your car has a Radio-Frequency alarm so you need one of the keys with a built-in RF transmitter circuit.
