Hello, alfa owners!

I am a bit concerned about my 2006 159 1.9jtdm 16v and the fact that some mystery noise comes on when I turn on the A/C. The noise can only be heard at low speeds and is relevant to the engine RPM which leads me that it is a pulley. I have had the car checked at the local Alfa specialist who had replaced only one of the pulleys and the auxiliary belt because it had some damage on it on 2 spots(the belt was only about 10 months old and about 12k km on it). The sound did not go away tho... It is strange that you can hear it from only the inside or at least I have not been able to hear the noise while I was trying to find the source of it. If I could describe the noise it would be something like cutting through metal with an angle grinder. The noise is not constantly there when the A/C is on but only occasionally which leads me to the fact that it is either coming from the compressor's bearing or some pulley which only gets enough stress to make the noise when the compressor is working.
After reading some topics online I noticed that a common cause of the problem is the tensioner pulley... What is the procedure to take the tension of the belt so that I can check the pulleys for play and noise? I will be happy to hear your suggestions also!

I cleaned my A/C clutch but it still made the same noise afterwards, but TBF I only gave it a cursory effort as I was short of time.

You have low refrigerant oil.
Refill with the right quantity and it should be no noise.
The right quantity for 1.9 is 550 g of refrigerant (Alfa Service Catalogue).

Many of the service tools are set to refill with only 460 g.

I had the same problem as you and I fixed it this way.

Good luck.

Thanks for the fast replies!

I got my system charged this summer since it had a leak in it. I was not there when this happened tho, so I am not really sure how much refrigerant the guy put in it... Can you still give me some info on the clutch disassembly procedure and what tools do I need for that?

If the noise is inside the car, in the dashboard and it start only when you turn on the AC, I suggest you to check and refill the refrigerant than disassembly the compressor clutch. It's much cheaper.

But, it's up to you.

The noise that is in the video posted in the thread @fangface666 shared a link to is exactly the same as the one I get. I will try to clean the clutch today and tell you if that fixed the problem.

I took the clutch plate off and cleaned it pretty well. It didn't look that bad but anyway I used some sandpaper to clean it and wiped it with some brake cleaner. The final result can be seen on the photos below.

Unfortunately the problem is still there. It's such a pity that a service specializing in Alfa Romeo did the repairs on my AC system and did not put the correct amount of refrigerant in it. The noise has been there since I got the car from the service(the AC didn't work before that, because it was leaking). I am also about 2600km away from the service at the moment so I can't really go back and ask to get my system charged up with the correct amount...
I guess for next year I will have to get some more refrigerant into the system. Do you think I could have damaged anything? I drove like this for a bit over month.
Thanks for the help!

P.S. Anyway I would like to know how to take the tension off of the auxiliary belt. Could you tell me how that works? Sorry for the silly questions but the search tool in the forum doesn't do it for me. It searches google...
