1.9 jtd - how to reduce black smoke?

Hi everyone, i have a GT Q2 with the 1.9 jtd engine and everything is running smoothly ;) however, as with all diesels when you put your foot down hard you always get some black smoke choking out of the back.

Tbh its not too bad but i was wondering if there was a way or maybe a little trick that anyone might know to reduce it further?

I've read on a few other posts that having the EGR valve removed and blanked off can stop majority of it, is this true?

I'd appreciate any views on this. Cheers Matt.

Cheers guys. Its not a problem really, I don't get that much that I can see it in the mirror, it's literally just the (well what i would consider) normal amount. BUT i just wondered if there was maybe a trick or something that could be done to reduce it further (ideally so there none but i know thats not possible). Im really just being picky!

For example; following another diesel car (any make), you know when they put their foot down (or when they're in the wrong gear!) because of the smoke and i just wondered if there was a way to reduce this?

Maybe EGR removal might help? I've been needing to get this done for sometime tbh, i have the classic motor control error which is definitely EGR valve. I've cleaned it several times, and took it to Peak Alfa and they're convinced its the EGR valve causing the error. He's even reset ECU and its fine until you put foot down and then "boop" management light is back! Doesn't actually cause any problem when driving though (or at least i don't think it does i.e. no lack o power or anything). Anyway, story over!

Any tricks or is EGR removal and blanker plate the way forward?

t3yls - have you noticed any improvements since having your EGR valve removed?

AND finally (sorry for the lengthy multi-topic thread); I assume i'll need to get a remap if i do decide to get it removed?

I stripped and cleaned the EGR and it was better. Then I blanked it off completely with a ÂŁ2 metal plate off ebay and realised what a fool I was for not doing that sooner!!

no you don't need a remap to get it to stop working -although a remap can stop it from working and get rid of the engine management light (which I get because I have no remap).

I suggest you do the cheap ebay option first -if that makes a difference, then decide to go down remap route or not. if you can live with the engine light, like i can ...problem solved for ÂŁ2.

you can also get a metal plate with some small holes in which will stop the engine light coming on as well. Use search function and read up.

Like I said its not really smoke and perhaps calling it black smoke was misleading

Its what I would class as the normal amount of diesel soot that every diesel engine car in the world kicks out.

You don't think yours has "smoke"? get a friend to fully rev her for you while your stood behind.... you'll see what I mean ;) ....but like i said its not technically smoke i dont think.

mine smokes like a gud un, both before and after a GUS remap

all new hoses, all new turbo control hoses, egr clean, map clean , AFM clean... still no better for smoke, but runs well

Gus told me my injectors could be at fault, not sealling properly

Yeah Roger at Peak Alfa says EGR removal and remap will sort it. Apparently my EGR valve is on its last legs... hello MCSF light, ah we meet again and probably not for the last time

Nb, Gaz love your footer "Poverty Spec in Dog Nob Red" made me laugh for some time!

Haha fair point, I concede! But I did start this before the return of the MCSF light to which NOW i know its the EGR valve... but you're still right ;)

There will be one day, for what i can only imagine to be a brief moment when I get in my GT and think 'wow, there's not a single problem, nothing at all, no errors, everything's working, windows go up properly, there's no airbag fault, the mcsf light has gone away, the egr valve is fixed, straight through MOT (as always though to be fair) there's no condensation in my rear light and even if these were all still problems, at least there not a mark on the bodywork so it still looks awesome' ..... and at this point of a seemingly modest revelation, i'll get shunted by a chav in a 1.0 purple corsa with an untreated, grey plastic **** body kit that he tried to fit himself!

Got to love it though :)

My MCSF light stayed on for a week after cleaning my MAP sensor with carb cleaner. Unless the car feels sluggish, your EGR might not be the problem. That said, they are a lump of crap :/

Mine also has the same diesel smoke under acceleration. All obvious things have been ruled out or replaced so I'm guessing its going to be an injector(s) that's causing it if there is supposed to be absolutely zero diesel smoke.

I don't get though how there will be zero diesel smoke without dpf, I thought it was a natural characteristic of a Diesel engine hence the introduction of dpf?

I agree. As far as i know factory air/fuel ratios are well below the 'black smoke limit', beyond that ratio the 'extra' diesel does not combust fully and hense black smoke. But power does increase, albeit with with increased fuel consumption and black smoke due to the less efficient fuel burning.

That's why i was wondering if it isn't 'normal' for a remapped diesel to smoke more than normal. I would asume they run much closer to this limit, or possibly even beyond
