I finally got a new knob. Mine broke into pieces back in August - it was cracked and damaged in 2015. I have been knobless since.

It seems to be a common problem on AR 147.GT/156 that the handbrake knobs disintegrate. Nobody seems to sell them in UK. There is a Turkish seller on eBay who has sold 1,000+ of the shiny chrome version fitted to my car.

Unfortunately the first one I ordered never arrived. I waited a month then contacted the seller and he was great, sending me another one by tracked post, which took another month - but arrived today. He'd only used an ordinary envelope, which had split and would have been lost but the UK PO kindly stuck it in a plastic bag. This is probably what became of my first one - it escaped and was lost. There's probably a bucket of lost knobs somewhere.

If you need a new knob, ask the seller to use a Jiffy bag. Mine eventually came from Yuskorn_47 ALFA ROMEO 147 156 GT HANDBRAKE BUTTON REPLACEMENT CHROME HAND BRAKE BUTTON | eBay

It fits perfectly (tight push fit) and seems unlikely to break :) Only a tiny thing, but not having a knob to polish annoyed the hell out of me.

There is another seller on eBay in Italy, who sells the black version and the satin chrome type. eg Button handbrake alfa romeo 147 Chrome (Satin) | eBay

There is someone selling replacement knobs on Amazon, for 'Polo CROSS GTI alfa-romeo 147 handbrake button cover'. Sadly, although quite a lot cheaper and quicker to arrive, these do not fit the Alfa. Nice quality button - but description is wrong. It DOES NOT FIT an Alfa Romeo 147

I got my knob from the same seller two and a half years ago. Felt really quite begrudged to be spending £20 on a silly shiny handbrake knob, but as I couldn't get one anywhere else I decided to just do it. Has held up okay, good to know they're still available!
