Hi all

I am part of the Vulcan to The Sky Club, a charity involved in the multi-million pound restoration project which last year saw the world's only flying Vulcan Bomber return to the skies.

We need to identify further funding of one million pounds by the end of February to enable us to display XH558 at Britain's airshows again this year.

On 22nd February, a team of club members and engineers will attempt to drive around all 15 UK-based Vulcan airframes within 24 hours, starting at East Fortune at 00:01, and arriving in Southend before midnight.

I'm leading the project at the Vulcan based at the Midland Air Museum in Coventry, where the team are are due to arrive in the club Scooby (yes I know, but I had no say in the matter! Subaru are one of our main sponsors) at 10:20 on the day (traffic allowing, of course!)

I want to make my part of the event special, and I would love to have a group of Alfas lurking nearby to escort the car into the car park of the museum in style!

I would suggest meeting a couple of miles away and charging into Coventry en masse.

Would anybody be interested in coming along?

Entry to the museum is just 5.25 and they have an excellent collection, including the magnificent Vulcan herself.

Not only that, you would be helping to keep this iconic aircraft in the sky!

If there's enough interest I will arrange a meeting time/place shortly. Is anyone local to Coventry who can think of a good place to meet?

Hope I can count on your support

Aggy

Re: Vulcan Scramble comes to Coventry

I would like to help but I have a few difficulties.

Firstly in the present economic crisis frankly much as i'd love to see it up and about there are significantly more important issues.

Secondly there was talk of the Vulcan coming to Biggin Hill last year but it never did. A number of excuses were made none of which held water. This would have been a great opportinity to raise some cash.

Shame

Re: Vulcan Scramble comes to Coventry

Hiya

We did indeed suffer with a couple of no-shows last year.

People don't seem to understand that we're displaying an aging airframe with a limited parts resource.

If a Red Arrow has a problem at an airshow, they roll out Red Ten and nobody is any the wiser - we don't have that liberty.

We were not able to attend all the airshows we had planned to for a number of reasons.

Last year was the first airshow season 558 had attended in 16 years - and in my opinion she did a sterling job.

This year with more money and more support (and without the crushing disappointment of RIAT being cancelled), we will do better.

If 558 is not displayed this year, it will be the nail in the coffin for this incredible aircraft.

Our aim is to "honour the past and inspire the future" - inspiring young engineers into the trade - in return helping to heave Britain out of recession!

There may well be a number of issues closer to your heart but there is none closer to mine.

I'm not asking your guys for money, only for your time to escort the car into Coventry and make the day spectacular for the Vulcan, for the museum and for Alfa owners.

Re: Vulcan Scramble comes to Coventry

do you have a list of the sites you'll be visiting?

I know that

http://www.thunder-and-lightnings.co...survivors.html

show where the remaining airframes are (there was talk of a local pub buying Blackpool's Vulcan, but it proved too expensive to move, so they got a Sea Harrier).

Will be on the Mersey Meet, but a good mate works at Woodford, so could help the funds there, if there's a collection.

Re: Vulcan Scramble comes to Coventry

Afternoon All!

I'm helping Lady bug organize the Coventry leg of the scramble and just for info 558 didn't appear at Biggin Hill as she didn't receive her permit to fly until the 4th of July, Biggin was in June. As said earlier there were a number of no shows but the majority of these were down to weather, as 558 operates under V.F.R. the crew has to have a minimum amount of forward visibility and be able to see the ground at all times, tis a pain in the bum but those are the rules!.

Also serviceability can be an issue with an aircraft of 558's age and complexity, often relatively small faults can ground the aircraft, for example the periscope which is used to monitor the underside of the aircraft is simple bit of kit but should it break the aircraft is not allowed to fly as it is a flight safety item.

And for a little bit more info(boredom) heres a list of venues and e.t.a's

East Fortune dep 00.05

Solway eta 2.15am

Carlisle eta 3.30am

Woodford eta 6.10 am

Cosford eta 7.50am

Wellesbourne eta 9.40am

Coventry eta 10.20 am

Brunty eta 11.30am

East Mids eta 12.50pm

Newark eta 14.15pm ( to be confirmed )

Waddo eta 15.15pm

Norwich eta 17.15pm

Duxford eta 19.00pm

Hendon eta 21.00pm

Southend eta 23.30pm

Hope this helps and anything else feel free to ask.

Re: Vulcan Scramble comes to Coventry

Guys, we're hatching a plan whereby the Alfa gang would meet at Wellesbourne, Warks and accompany the Scooby along the whole of the leg to Coventry.

It's about a half-hour trek.

This way we don't delay the car by making them detour to meet us, and will hopefully gather some interest on the way!

I know themole and I are happy to do this, what do you guys think?

Hmm, weather permitting, this could be a good excuse to give the Berlina its first propper run of the year.

Re: Vulcan Scramble comes to Coventry

Right guys here's the plan.

There will be a "pre-meet" at Frankley services on the M5 at 0900 sharp. This will be led by themole (gabiano blue 156 with carry-handle) along with Green Berlina (it's a Berlina, and it's...er... green )

They will convoy to Wellesbourne, where the Scooby is expected to arrive at around 0940 and depart shortly afterwards.
I would reccommend being at Wellesbourne for 0930. I'll be joining in at Wellesbourne.

We will then convoy with the Scooby to Coventry, where a journalist will be waiting, so best Alfa smiles everyone

If anyone needs a satnav postcode or any other info, please PM me or themole.

Hope to see plenty of you there

Afternoon All

Just for added Info the route Rob and Steve will be taking from Wellesbourne is the A429, onto the A46, round on to the A45 then up Rowley Road. so you should be able to stage the R.A.C. pick up trucks along the way!

Hi Simon

It will be on the airfield - I've asked the Wellesbourne site manager exactly where is best to meet, I'll post the exact details here by tomorrow night. You can PM me your number if you like and I can text you the postcode when I have it

Re: Vulcan Scramble comes to Coventry

Right then guys, suggest we all meet outside the flying schools where the Touchdown Cafe is (CV35 9EU).

Look out for me (aqua blue 156)- the car will be covered in Scramble posters so you won't miss me! In the event that you have to park further down the road, meet me by the cafe doors (I will have my Vulcan fleece on).

I'm going to print off some easy to read posters - just saying something like "Save XH558 - pledge now!" and the web address.

If anybody would be happy to put one in their back/side windows for the journey I would appreciate it, but if you don't want sellotape on your glass I understand! I will have my Fast Glass with me though!

Re: Vulcan Scramble comes to Coventry

I have committed myself elsewhere on this day but would recommend it to anybody thinking of going to see this Vulcan in the flesh. We saw it at Farnborough last year and it was an awesome machine. Hopefully we will catch it again later this year. Good luck and hope the day goes well.

Re: Vulcan Scramble comes to Coventry

See you in the morning guys:

0900 (absolute latest, quarter-to if you can manage it) at Frankley Services (southbound)

or

0930 Wellesbourne Mountford airfield.

I have a variety of posters I would LOVE you to have in your windows on the way - free tickle with some Fast Glass afterwards!

Look forward to seeing you all

Re: Vulcan Scramble comes to Coventry

A pleasant morning had by all, Thanks for letting us know about this LadyBug. Wellsbourne and Cov had all six Alfas in attendance, Myself, TheMole and The Red Sprint (can't remember the owners name ) then set off for Brunty, but lost the red sprint along the way in trying not to loose the Vulcan Scramble Subaru. Had a propper guided tour @ Brunty after seeing the Subaru off on the rest of its journey. ITN film crew were in attendance, so may be on the telly later .
