The Rugby Union Thread

I thought I might start this topic in the true image of rugby union... As the slightly dozy kid brother, trying desperately to emulate its more experienced and worldly older sibling (the football discussion thread)

Anyway, with the autumn internationals, six nations, and a Lions tour coming up, there is much for the egg chaser to discuss....

Anyway, first up is the autumn internationals. As the rankings at the end of the year directly effect the seedlings for the next world cup, the pressure is on for all teams to improve (or maintain) their rankings. The runners and riders..

England - they have a tough schedule against the SH big three, but will confident after their summer win in SA, and have a relatively easy start against Fiji

Wales - has their progress stalled after a frustrating tour to Aus? Cruelly without the magnificent Dan Lydiate, and with Rhys Priestland out of form. On the plus side, they have the Gatfather back, and two top class openside flankers.

Ireland - Ravaged by injuries. Kidneys hand has been forced in terms of blooding new players. Could be a good thing? Captaincy may bring out the best in Jamie Heaslip.

Scotland - Again ravaged by injuries. Scotland need their best players on the field to stand a chance. Then again, Scotland often play their best rugby with their backs to the wall.

France - the cockerel to crow again. My pick for 'dark horses of the month'

Argentina - will be encouraged after a decent (albeit winless) first year in the expanded tri-nations. Will they be tired after a long season though??

Australia - a huge injury toll. The most likely scalp of the SH big three. Never a pushover though, as NZ found in their last match.

South Africa - rebuilding, and prone to over-confidence on these tours. Without Bryan Habana, who has had a great 'Indian summer' in his career. However they do have huge amounts of exciting young players coming through

NZ - will be motivated anew after a distinctly mediocre draw in their last match with Aus. Rumblings from Aoteroa suggest that some of the 'old guard' world cup winners (such Piri Weepu and Ali Williams) are there on reputation rather than form. Good, but not quite as good as the media portray them.

Inspirational, Celebrational, Muppetational....

Has Rhys Priestland ever been in form?

I'll be opening a brew too.

Pick the pub carefully, they may turn it off after half an hour to put Stoke vs Q.P.R. on.

Correction on my part. Howley is still Wales coach, as Gatland is on Lions duty (which seems ridiculously early - all he can do is watch from the stands)

or with his broken ankles, from the sits.

Howley as coach is the only worrying aspect.....he's a good attacking coach, like Edwards is a great defensive coach, but is he an International Team Manager?

Very poor display and a good win for Argentina

Priestland get ball. Kick ball

Faletau. Get ball. Take into contact when there are passes available

Game needs to be upped

Looked rudderless and impotent.

Seems ALL the S/H teams have moved on since the World Cup.

Didn't see any Lion's performances today.

What an awful display by Wales today in Cardiff, Argentina thoroughly deserved their 26-12 victory, lots of thought provoking decisions to be made by the Welsh RFU after that game, methinks !!!!.........

I started tight head but was in and out - they considered me too slow.

Tried full back but didnt like running at the front row

Tried fly half but kicking wasnt my strong point back then. Much like Priestland now actually

Got stuck on the wing and ran in 4 tries in my first game so i stayed there

Cheers

I played in the second row for years until a crook back put an end to it. Still miss playing.

My playing progression went from jumping at 5 in the lineout, to jumping at 2 as I got fatter and harder to lift

Anyway, let's see if Ireland can do better against the Bokke.
