And they’re not getting donations from big French companies. A much better PR opportunity.

you know, people think they are onto something by hammering the donations made towards rebuilding this beautiful centuries old church - i speak for all the bright sparks on the general internet not the OP here - who in their haste to make a catchy shallow quip quickly forget that any disaster is usually followed by a pouring of donations from the general public to alleviate the unforeseen financial pressure that these disasters bring - from forest fires, to earthquakes to tsunamis ...

...to royal castles

That's not exactly the same is it?

In the same way that frozen peas aren't exactly the same as a cross channel ferry.

Different things are important to different people for different reasons. I won't personally be chipping towards Notre Dame being fixed but if it was Manchester Cathedral I might.

On a slightly different note, two things occurred to me about the Notre Dame fire:
i) Wasn't it insured?
ii) Are the owners the Roman Catholic Church, one of the wealthiest organisations in the World?

The owners are the French Ministry of Culture who are resonsible for the maintenance. However they can't afford it so there is some sort of charity - Friends of ND or something.

Found this:
https://www.thelocal.fr/20190417/wil...d-by-insurance

The State will have to pay unless one of the building contractors are found to have caused the blaze, in which case their insurers *might* cough up.

Apparently the carpenters working on the roof were not using (or not supposed to be using) electrical tools because of the fire risk.

Ferrari spend £570 million on cars driving around in circles. Ronnie O'Sullivan has earned £10 million from hitting balls with a stick. The UK spent £57 million on a garden bridge that never got built. Last month my wife bought 3 pairs of shoes.

Most of the figures in the article are wrong too but as an excellent example of whataboutery it still stands up.

Notre Dame is just a building.

It's tempting to ask if anyone knows the amount pledged to rebuild homes for the people who weren't burnt to death in the Grenfell tower tragedy but I guess that would just be a catchy shallow quip.

Agreed Starkers.....but then again some other people didn't seem to grasp the meaning of my original post.

Fact 1 - Notre Dame will be rebuilt
Fact 2 - no matter how many donations and pledges there will still be starving people
Fact 3 - there wil be fat-cats getting rich(er) out of both Facts 1 & 2 whether it's allocating a contract or syphoning off a lorry-load of rice.

I regret the burning of Notre Dame and I feel for the starving and homeless but in both cases I'm not sure where my donation would end up.

"going"? ... im done

bringing up peoples suffering as a resentment for the donations being made to restore a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a little misdirected - there are TRILLIONS of Euros of transactions made every day that could attract the same sort of "shaming" - why this particular event ?, why now ? you all know what this means to millions of French Catholics, let them spend their money as they see fit

dont bother answering, im not interested any more than what has been already said - Happy Easter

How very Christian you show yourself to be.

Shaming?....where did I say that?

You seem to be under the illusion that I was having a go at Christianity....barking up the wrong tree....I am an Irish Catholic.

Perhaps if you could see through your fervour as to what i was getting at in the original post you might calm down.

I will say a wee prayer for you this Easter.
