The Professionals

Lads,

Do any of you remember Bodie, Doyle and Cowley? Had a bit of a watch last night, brought back lots of great memories. I always remebered the Escort and Capri, but in the very early episodes they used a TR7 and a Dolomite.

Never knew Martin Shaw was Doyle. A few years ago he was George Gently.

I loved the Professionals.

Before I could drive, and because of this show, I always wanted to drive a big engined Capri.

Sadly, I still never have.

Yes indeed! There was a very handsome Granada too in red with those nice alloys that Cowley used to smoke about it. There was a phone in the rear armrest - very avant-garde for the time 🙂

great episode, in good quality, right here

The gun sound effects are quite something!

The soundtrack, even better!

Acting is...well...

I loved it as a kid and still watch the odd episode now. Another big influence that fostered a love of cars.

The early episodes used cars from the BL press fleet like the P6, TR7, and Dolly Sprint. They had reliability issues and problems with continuity because they couldn't always get the same cars.

Ford, when asked, saw the opportunity and gave them what they needed. If you watch closely you'll see an X-pack Mk2 Capri 3.0S in one episode.

It's also worth seeking out the episode where Roger Lloyd Pack plays an assassin.

Auto Express - six issues for a quid. Offer must end soon (and then immediately start up again).

I always felt Bodie never worked again because Martin Shaw wanted to stop playing Doyle and take better roles.

Loved it. Doyle’s leather bomber jacket and Bodie’s permanent lip-curl. Sort of a UK version of Starsky and Hutch? Not sure if Cowley was Huggie Bear or Cap’n Dobey

Always try to watch an episode on ITV4.

Lewis Collins went to the same school as me ☺️

Love spotting the great (and not so great!) Cars of the 70s.

Trigger wore some big sunglasses in the whole episode as an assassin!!!

Lewis went off to America after The Professionals and Who Dares Wins. But died of cancer in his 50s

Heard they were good friends but never really mixed socially off screen

He was 67 when he died. Went to LA to learn how to become a director. Instead, he ended up selling computer parts after he gave up acting, as he never really got the job offers.

He went for the roll as James Bond after Rodger Moore was winding his 007 career down. He apparently had a running with a produce and never got casted because of it.

Office Chair.

Gordon Jackson was also in Upstairs and Downstairs as a butler before The Professionals IIRC. My parents watched that honest

Loved The Professionals but I was more of a 'The Sweeney' fan.

"We're the Sweeney son, and we haven't had any dinner" is possibly the finest line ever uttered on TV.

I noticed that too. Mrs K wasn't as impressed as I thought she would be.

Didn't get a real Capri, but did manage a mark 2 Escort, sadly not an RS2000.

They used to show them in the mornings on ITV4 a few years ago.
I caught quite a few of them when doing my cardio workouts in the gym.
I do a bit of work every now and again, honest!

I thought the opposite - Shaw objected to the Professionals being repeated, denying Collins the repeat fees

In interviews Shaw has said that he was forced into making 4 series of it. He didn't want to but was in his contractually obliged. Very strange.

"So Mr Shaw, we've got this new role. You'll get to teararse around in other people's fast cars, **** about with guns, snog fit women, and thump blokes with moustaches. There will be explosions, dodgy foreign accents, bad suits and worse hair. you'll become a household name."
"Erm, no thanks. Have you not got anything turgid where I get to wear a wig?"
