Re: Home Cinema Speaker Wire !!

I love this topic! Oxygen free, directional, low frequency bent, high frequency pass - yadda yadda yadda.

We install high-end audio systems for broadcast and 90% of the time we use twin core mains cable. As long as there is enough copper to get the signal to the speakers (bell wire is on the limit), then you won't see a difference.

Trust me, I'm an engineer.

For a digital system, the diameter of the wire has to be a bit larger than the '1's, or they'll stick on their way along. The '0's slip through OK, as they're round.

Play the theme from 'Grease' at least once a week to keep it all lubricted and flowing correctly.

Trust me, I'm an amateur gynaecologist.

I know! I save a hell of a lot of money on cables (when I actually buy them instead of 'borrowing' them from work).

Yeah, construction, that's what I said.

You could probably get away with 1mm, it's more commonly used (read cheaper) and if you're running longer lengths then it has less chance of loss. Harder to hide under the floor/behind skirting boards/on top of picture rails, though.

Have you ever considered a false ceiling?

I can't get the 'decorating co-ordinator' to agree to anything other than the colour of the wire I linky earlier and you want me to suggest a false ceiling

Wish I'd thought of mains cable before I bought a wad of flat cable to go under the floor!

Re: Home Cinema Speaker Wire !!

Just got my Amplifon hearing test invite, AGAIN! Two one hundred pound discount vouchers included, so I'm ready, Eddie, for a super high tech electronic pair of earoles' shortly, Not!

Blessing sometimes not to hear certain stuff, imo.: Seriously, on the Hi-Fi front, using the Sansui amp to pump up from Sat TV, DVD,or all the other stuff, works well driving six decent speakers. Got switching for, two, four, six, or eight I suppose, if you count the TV's pair, which are, well!: Leads braided shielded , flat type, bit difficult to work with, but sounds fine, to my bone hard old hearing.

Nightmare scenario. Routing satellite cables from two dishes, terrestrial cable, power cables, anti-surge boxes, speaker cables and all the other crap,Blah! Blah! makes me cringe thinking about the final move into sheltered accommodation!

Re: Home Cinema Speaker Wire !!

If you're over 30, standard 2 core 6A mains cable
will do fine.

If you like spending money for no reason,
there's plenty of expensive pseudo-scientific

Re: Home Cinema Speaker Wire !!

Couldn't be arsed to wade through the whole thread but the general rule of thumb as I;ve been led to believe is spend 10% of what your system cost on cables and interconnects to hook it all together.

That includes the cables that hook all the separates together as well as speaker cable.

Jeez, so glad I'm not an audiophile. Was considering it, years ago, when a friend told me he'd spent £1500 on a cartridge for his turntable - and that was second hand!!
