Alfa Gt 1.9JTDm Turbo?

Hi guys.

Iv had my car remapped last year and it feels great. but since then iv put on a FMIC, fitted a fully flowing exhaust and now im just wondering how safe i can push my turbos. my tuners said it was pushing around 195bhp when he last mapped it but i fugred with the added mods it should go back in for a tune up.

i think my turbo is running at around 22psi. is this the max?

cheers

Did you get to the bottom of the issue you were having with the MAP sensor?

As 22psi is around 1.5 Bar i would'nt go higher on the stock turbo - first your efficiancy will drop so you'd need a better IC and secondly the shaft speed will rise rapidly into dangerous regions. Maybe 1.7 would be possible but i doubt it will last long.

1.5bar is very much on the safe side for that turbo. But higher you go more stress you put on the turbo.
If you want everyday reliability, keep it below 1.6bar up to 4000rpm. And then linear drop to 1.4bar at 4500rpm.

Going over 200HP with that stock turbo is very hard.

Pud - i cant remember ever having a map sensor problem.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Ill no push my turbo any more as i really need reliability.
Do i need to get it retuned tho since iv now fitted Fmic and free flowing exhaust? Or will my ecu automatically adjust the mixture.

Cheers

You will need a new tune, because diesel are limited by pre-set fuel injection. Adding more air won't change anything (except a bit less smoke)...

195bhp will be plenty for most driving conditions wont it ??

I must be thinking of someone else then, my bad

Have you had it on a rolling road? I'd do that first before re-tuning, it will give you an idea of other changes that can be made to the map to smooth it out, make it more linear and iron out any dips in the torque curve. This makes as much difference if not more than getting the headline peak power figure up.

Iv not had it on the rolling road yet. The shop that did my remap just told me the approx figures from the sensors readings he was getting.
I do see what you mean about getting it rolling roaded and i think may do just so i know how the curve looks.

It is not hard to exceed 200bhp on a standard turbo, it is just not safe for the engine/turbo. I've seen many tuners happily pushing boost on standard turbos to near the limit of the standard 3 bar absolute sensor. Most tuners don't take any logs from the car when tuning and actually have no idea what they are handing back to you.

Yeah and close to 3 bar on a stock turbo is a great idea!
