Can you move the engine backwards ?

Hi

Crazy question time: in a 156 GTA, can you move the starter and alternator to the front, and move the engine further back ?
Anyone done it ?

I was thinking I'd like to move battery to the boot, remove A/C, remove belt driven power steering and replace with electro-hydraulic steering pump from a Saxo or something, then I could move alternator to the front of the engine for easy access and replacement. Less drag on the belt too. But you couldn't easily move the starter as it'd mean a complete modification of the bellhousing. And as Allerd says there isn't a lot of room between the exhaust manifold & bulkhead or the diff-housing and subframe anyway, I don't think it could go back much at all. Might be easier to modify the suspension to push the wheels a little further forward.

Why do you need the engine further back?

Weight distribution? The S2000 race 156's engine was set further back... But that was 4Cyl... V6 already tight squeeze..

Other suggestion... could the V6 be tilted backwards?

If the biggest constraint was the steering rack, then you could lengthen the steering arms on the uprights - I think you will loose min turning circle, but the extra lever might negate the need for power steering. Ok the converse is that you need more steering input to make the same turn.

User alan33+Q4 did something similar on his GTV V6 and now 156 V6, he tilted the engine backwards to move center of gravity a bit back...

Find his thread on the forums...

I doubt that moving engine backwards 3-5cm will affect car's balance much, V6 is a lot more IN FRONT of front axle.....maybe better effect will be lowering it's position.......
If i must choose between moving engine 100mm back or 50mm low, i will do the second......
