Is this a lsd?

I found a F40 gearbox at work from a 166 2.4 20v.
I was distracted by the shiny inside of the diff! When I took a closer look I spotted this!
afaik if the center of a diff is open , its a lsd. All other f40 gearboxes we stock have that center axle in sight.
Strange part is , the gearbox doesnt look like it had ever been opened, also the 166 was driven by some old guy untill he trashed it , and was completly stock as far as I could see.

What do you guys think?

put a shaft into it from one side and rotate it, if the other side rotates in same direction then it's lsd, if in opposite direction then it's normal diff

if it's a torsen style diff (quaiffe), both sides will still turn opposite directions...

It's most likely a torsen diff... at least if it's different from the other f40 boxes you've seen...

jep , all other f40's have that inner axle with the spider wheel on it.

most sites say that if you can see trough , its lsd , if it had the inner axle its an open diff

that's my experience aswell, hence I think it's a torsen style diff

well... not realy.. q2 seems to be completly open as "my" diff just has a small opening in the middle.

Does anyone had a pic of a quaife diff''s internals?

kinda looks like that, but mine has a little square in the middle of the circular hole.

Strange thing is , my car also has this diff!
Wenn I checked my own gearbox it looked the same! A have a few other f40 gearboxes at work , also 156, 166 and 159/brera, that have a conventional diff..
Seems like early 20v's have it , newer 20v's don't.

Allerd I really am not sure what you have. I sold my last 20v box a while ago so can't check anything at the moment.

Have you not changed the diff to your 20v yet? You really should, they make such a fantastic upgrade

No I didn't, it has the same diff as pictured above.
I always thought it cornered just like my previous 156 3.0 q2, this is probably why.

Does that little square in the middle sounds familiar to you?

I'm not familiar with what the inside of the F40 should look like, I've spent hardly any time working with them. I would be surprised if it is a Quaife diff from what you say about the old owner, but then it does look much like Yan.ko's QDH6E diff. I'll have to check out the QDF21B for F40 and see what it looks like through the middle.

if you could check , that'd be great!
It is factory fit, both my 2004 156 and a 2004 spare gearbox here have it , newer models don't.
I have 4 156/166 boxes and about 8 or 9 159/brera ones.
