I bought some accoustic foam with lead sheet in it and cut to fit over the top of rocker, reduced db very little, and most of noise comes from under tray area,i have no under tray at moment and makes it worthless using rocker cover.
It would be a lot of £ to reduce a few db.

Decat it,nice straight through exhaust system and remap,it will make a lot of difference to how less "diesel" it will sound.

you could add a little bit of 2-stroke oil to the fuel. 0.25% is enough...

Yes a bit of 2 stroke oil, about 200ml to £50 of fuel or some millers eco max will make it much quieter and smoother

Must admit I was shocked at the noise a 159 1.9 JTD made when starting, I was walking past in front and it sounded like a bag of nails By comparison my 20v sounds much quieter when cold and on tick over when warm not at all unpleasent.

In fact passengers are often unaware it is a diesel, well until it start to growl that is.

I found in my 2-stoke years that an engine gets much noisier when in need of a de-coke or indeed of a good thrashing or long drive rather than pottering around town - diesels just don't like short stop-start low speed journeys.

That comparison is unfair on the 1.9, your comparing 4 cylinders vs 5! All 4 cylinder diesels clatter, its in their nature! My 8v jtd clatters as loud as my wifes 130 tdi ibiza.

As you add more cylinders though diesels tend to quieten down. Look at the vw v10 tdi in the toureag, sounds as close to a petrol as you could get with as much torque to pull a house down lol!

Think thats half the problem-you dont need to rev a diesel to get the torquey bit so people dont and like you say, they clog up, answer is give it some beans, hit the rev limit (they do have one) now and again and keep it clear, works wonders

Office Chair.

Miniator the 4 cyl Honda diesels sound very quiet. I drove my mate's Accord at work and inside and out it is hard to believe it's a diesel
My 1.9 JTDm on the other hand as mentioned doesn't half rattle
