Idea Greenlight Modified Car Insurance for Members

Hi Everyone,

Having noticed your specific section relating to vehicle upgrades I felt there to be some merit to posting here, as we offer a relevant service to those of you with modified/enhanced vehicles.

Whilst new to Alfaowner, Greenlight have been Insuring performance, modified, classic and kit cars since our launch in 1996. It's pretty much all we do.

Some of you may have encountered us via other owners clubs, online forums or vehicle tuners over the years. But to date, whilst we have covered performance and classic Alfa Romeo models for our customers, we have not had any affiliation with an Alfa owners club or forum (so please be gentle ).

The reason for posting here is to detail part of our service and to confirm that we very much welcome vehicle modifications (we can cover anything up to and including roll cages, or nitrous oxide conversions).

Our cover under our modified vehicle schemes operates on the basis of replacing damaged or stolen parts on a like for like replacement basis, which is a feature that we pioneered back in 1996 and have operated since.

Track cover is also something that we are able to entertain under some of our annual policies, which again may be of use to some of you.

We can also entertain retro modified (modified classic) cars under our classic/custom car schemes.

Our staff own and run, or have owned and driven a combination of kit, classic, performance and modified cars (we even have an off road 4x4 Green Lane enthusiast) working here. Meaning our technical knowledge is strong and relevant to the customers we look to Insure.

We would welcome the chance to help the next time that you need to arrange cover for your vehicle and look forward to hearing from Alfa owners.

Kind regards

Tony

Hi Shroonie29,

Thanks for taking the time to post.

There are some excluded postcode areas under our preferentially rated schemes, which relate to the historic losses experienced by our respective scheme Underwriters within certain postcode areas.

Excluded postcodes are not usually on a wholesale basis and vary from scheme to scheme, for example under our classic or retro modified schemes there are hardly any exclusions due to the lower exposure under these schemes.

Everyday performance/modified vehicle policies have individual postcode exclusions throughout the country based upon claims experience, but again these are not usually wholesale and relate to specific sectors.

As an indication there are parts of the North West, parts of London and parts of Birmingham that will be problematic to most Insurers. Our Underwriters will have encountered and based their own rating terms or acceptance criteria upon their own experience, which is likely to be similar to those of their peers.

But that said, given that we do still have quite a number of customers covered with us in postcodes that are considered problematic by many, including B, BB, BD, BL, E (London), L, LS, N (London), NW (London), PR, SE (London), WA and WN postcodes. This supports that the Underwriters we deal with will take each customer application on it's merit and consider all detail.

Our technical team will look at every application upon it's merit and in higher rated areas factors such as how long you have been resident at the address, along with how long you have owned the vehicle you're looking to Insure (or similar) at this address, where the vehicle is located at the home address, the security fitted to your vehicle (or home) are more relevant.

We're here to write business and whilst there will be times that we're unable to help. Our feeling is very much that the common denominator we look for in a customer is that the customer cares about their vehicle, which is usually true for most performance, modified or classic car owners wherever they reside.

Kind regards

Tony

Interesting info there;
Birmingham
Blackburn
Bradford
Bolton
East London
Liverpool
Leeds
North London
North West London
Preston
Warrington
Wigan

Quite a heavy bias on the North West there (not a comment, just an observation). I'm from L and I live in LS near BD - no wonder my insurance has always been so expensive!

Hi Bobda,

It's individual postcodes within these areas that our Insurer partners find problematic and these areas are not excluded upon a wholesale basis.

The point I was trying to make is that whilst some areas will be a no go for us, we do have customers covered with us within parts of Birmingham, Blackburn, Bradford, Bolton, East/North/NorthWest London, Leeds, Liverpool etc that are considered problematic by the industry.

Personal injury claims are playing a big part in rating as they represent the largest cost to Insurers.

Whilst the frequency of accidents is actually down and modern vehicle safety has improved, the number of people presenting injury as a result of these accidents is high. Thus the recent comments by the government stating we must have "the weakest necks in Europe".

Parts of the North West do suffer quite badly from a disproportionately higher level of personal injury claim frequency than the average, with some areas showing over 4 out of every 10 accidents having injuries attached (which is far higher than most other areas).

There is a bit of a coincidence here in as much as the highest proportion of claims management companies and injury lawyers are also based within the North West region.

Before the cash for crash culture, the overall average cost of claims to Insurers was regularly less than 800. These days it's more like 2600 and rising. Almost entirely down to the rise of injury claims.

Theft is also an influencing factor, but costs are secondary to those of injury claims.

The main factors that we will look to support referral of our customer to Underwriters within some of the higher rated postcodes will be how long you have lived at the address, the parking arrangements at your address (ie. Garage, Drive, Car Park, Road) and how long you have owned (and exposed/driven) your vehicle (or similar) at the current postcode.

We will always try our best to accommodate wherever possible and any application will only ever be declined after we have exhausted all available options.

Kind regards

Tony

Hi cobalt,

Thanks for taking the time to post within our thread.

As mentioned before, there are parts of the country that we are unable to cover and there will be areas within South East London that are rated beyond the automatic acceptance criteria of our preferentially rated schemes.

Where the postcode is high risk and referral to Underwriters is required we will always look for supporting factors.

If you've been resident at your current address for a while and thus survived unscathed from the perceived or actual perils experienced by Underwriters, we will look to highlight this when manually seeking terms.

I'm also here to help and if you would like me to oversee or review any application I would be happy to do so

Kind regards

Tony

MK5 Golf GTI

Just a quick note from very, very satisfied Greenlight customer. Last year the best price I could find from mainstream insurers was 670 on an 05 Golf GTI with no mods declared and no protected NCB (5 years). Called Greenlight, was quoted 500 (no extra cost for my Miltek exhaust) plus 10% for a stage 1 map (+20% bhp) plus 30 to protect NCB, all in 580. The bloke I spoke to knew far more about car mods than me. Its the first time I've dealt with an insurer who I feel actually wanted me as a customer. A massive thumbs up!! Greenlight do a lot of business thru the forum on www.mk5golfgti.co.uk with very positive feedback. Suggest you give them a try!!!!

Hi dry664,

Being one of the 'new boys' on an established forum, with a community that we are largely unknown to due to our not having exposure to the Alfa brand in a big way to date could be an uphill struggle in the early days.

But as you have kindly (well actually, very kindly) explained from a customers perspective as to what we do, how we do it and that as an Insurance provider we do not conform to the usual 'men in grey' perspective.

Our staff own and run the types of vehicles that we Insure, which makes the experience of covering your vehicle a bit more personable and you have the added comfort that we have a good understanding of the less mainstream aspects such as vehicle modifications.

We live in a world where people seem to prefer to complain rather than praise, so it's great to see that the AlfaOwner community has the benefit of members such as yourself who share examples of good service (along with the specifics as to why you like us).

Customers are always appreciated and never taken for granted here at Greenlight, your loyalty and kind words are gratefully received.

Kind regards

Tony

Also a quick question to Tony. Your first post implies you are now covering 4x4's. Is this a new addition as when I tried to cover my second car in December you werent insuring 4x4's

I can say , as of today , that I'm a new but very satisfied customer of GREENLIGHT . My insurance on the 159 2.4 jtdm ti is up for renewal on the 4th April . It's been remapped/EGR/DPF modded , plus I tow a Minno Race trailer and I have had two other quotes of 492 and 415 in the last 3 days ------ I very nearly accepted the 415 via MR FLUX but waited for Greenlight to return my contact and was richly rewarded with a quote of 368-50p
Very many thanks to Will who contacted me today -- a brilliant deal !!!

Greenlight saved me over 300 and that included my suspension upgrade that my previous insurer would not even cover.
